    Colon cleansers

Hey just interested in hearing from people that have tried any of these products.
    Would you use them again?

Please don't spam this thread or post anything inappropriate because the mods will close it in a heartbeat if you do.

I've never had any colon problems, but they say its healthy to flush your system from time to time and I was thinking about giving this product a try.

well it certainly will clean you out.

i'm not a big fan of aggressive cleansing products personally. i think they lead to too high a risk of dehydration, as well as getting rid of healthy intestinal flora.

try using some psyllium husks for a while to bulk up your stool, and cleanse that way.

It was quite a while ago, but I know I started a discussion on this a while back. I never did anything about it, and am probably of the opinion that as long as you have a decent daily amount of fibre, you should be fine.

    Here is the thread:

I prefer to be proactive rather than reactive...

Well I started in on the trifecta of
1 tsp Activated charcoal from coconut shells - twice per day
1 tsp 100% pure Psyllium - twice per day
3-4 herbal tabs - twice per day (http://colon-cleanse-products.com/herbal-tabs.htm_

I started Friday night and have nothing out of the ordinary to report.
This combination is supposed to be administered for a 7 day period every few months.
I think its something I might do in conjunction with the beginning of a cut in future (more for peace of mind than any physical benefit I have witnessed)

PS, doing a little more research I came across this amusing story on prune juice

(please don't quote it as I'd rather this thread stay open!)

Deffinately don't use this one. It contains cascara segrada and senna which are very harsh lexatives and can mess up your colon. Since you have no digestive problems dont' mess with this stuff at all (some can do more bad then good). Just make sure you eat plenty of fiber and water, as well as EFAs.

    Second the fiber idea.

Eating enough fiber daily will definately assure that you go to the bathroom a healthier amount of times, and that your feces won't be sitting in there for an extended period of time.

Kgirl do you have any that you would recommend? I did some searching on google for cascara segrada and senna and haven't found anything negative about them...

    on Senna I've read:
Senna can cause the colon to become dependent on it to move properly. Therefore, senna must not be used for more than ten consecutive days. Chronic senna use can also cause loss of fluids, low potassium levels, and diarrhea, all of which can lead to dehydration and negative effects on the heart and muscles.
but thats the worst of it

Completely cleansing your colon when I assume its working perfectly fine? Many people who are too proactive end up doing more harm than good. That is what I meant.

geoffgarcia... "Senna can cause the colon to become dependent on it to move properly".. that's the most dangerouse thing about it. What happends is these harsh lexatives (senna, cascara secgrada..etc) make your colon contract more. When people use them the colon becomes used to these lexatives making it work and becomes lazy (stops working on it's own).

"Both cascara sagrada and senna contain anthracene derivative compounds which classify them as stimulant laxatives. They inhibit the stationary and stimulate the propulsive contractions of the colon resulted in an acceleration of waste passage through the intestines. Because of the shortened contact time, a reduction of liquid is absorbed in the lumen and water and electrolyte levels are increased in the intestines, and then expelled.

Long-term use leads to losses of electrolytes, in particular potassium ions, and as a result of this to hyperaldosteronism, albuminuria, hematuria, inhibition of intestinal motility, muscle weakness, enhancement of the effect of cardioactive steroids and an influence over the effects of antiarrhytmics. The question of the increase in probability of carcinomas in the colon following long-term administration of anthracene drugs has not yet been fully clarified."

Unless you have a GOOD reason to do a colon cleanse, don't do it. The #1 safest cleanse is just make sure to get enough fiber and lots of water. The safest colon cleanse would be a series of colonics (that can actually be good for for the body), just make sure to replenish the intestinal flora after.

I can't see that the oil in my car is bad after 3 months but I change it anyway....could I drive 50k miles on that oil? sure....I think one colon cleaning in the 27 years of my life doesn't make me "to proactive"

Kgirl, thanks for the extra info, but the plan I'm using is for a 7 day period which I dont think qualifies as "long term use" so I think I'll be ok...
You just haven't made a strong enough case to backup your statement "Unless you have a GOOD reason to do a colon cleanse, don't do it"

and don't flame me for not taking advice...I do take advice when it is backed up! opinions are taken w/ a grain of salt.

geoffgarcia.. I'm not exactly sure why you want to do a cleanse so I can't really provide you with any info. Lexatives such as senna and cascara segrada won't really remove anything that your body doesn't remove on it's own and can cause more bad then good. Yes, it won't kill you but it will do some harm. Who needs that?
If you are doing this just for the detox reasons and have no digestive problems there are MUCH safer cleansers out there.
Psellium, which is just a form of fiber is very safe as well as ground flaxseed (just make sure to drink a lot of water). Renewlife's Cleanse Smart is also pretty safe (mostly flaxseed, magnesium, and combination of some good oils).
If you'd like I can give you a phone # of a woman who sells all sorts of nonetraditional health products. She can probably help you find exactly what you're looking for.

I'd do it again in a heart beat
I haven't read anything that leads me to believe there is a negative effect on using any of the products I used here as the directions say to use them. Obviously if you abuse ANYTHING you'll have a negative reaction.
Hell you can die if you drink to much water!

Also I'd like to point out that I was mid way through a bulk when I started this program, and w/o modifying my diet at all I had a significant upswing in weight in the weeks following the completion of this short colon routine.

Could it be a coincidence? sure...will I try it next time I bulk and see if it makes a similar reaction? you betcha!!!!!!
