I was just wondering about this. I've heard that heavy lifting can damage your kidneys and I've noticed today that I have a bit of pain on my right side/lower back when I take a really deep breath. It was more apparent when I was lying down but still noticable when sitting or standing. Is it normal to get this when you really push yourself on heavy lifts? I did a session 2 days ago that was pretty tough on me. I was just wondering because I don't think I've ever pushed myself as hard as I did the other day on deadlifts and this is the first time I've felt pain in that area.
I often get pains there, but I have had kidney problems (unrelated to lifting) for a few years. My urologist says lifting will not do any damage. You may want to see a doc about it anyway though. You may just have something going on that has nothing to do with lifting.
Also, if it really is your kidneys, you'll feel a dull soreness/pain in your lower back that will not go away no matter what position you're in or how much you stretch. If that happens, you could have a kidney problem.

Not always. You described the most common manifestation, but kidney pain is a strange beast.Originally Posted by drew
Much more often than you think, kidney problems can manifest themselves as pain in areas of the body that simply don't make sense. One of my kidney issues caused pain around my gallbladder area. It's strange. It could be pulses, or constant, or very sharp instances.
It's worth it to get checked out.

No worries its a false alarm. LOL I had to pee really badly early this morning but was too lazy to get out of bed and kept going back to sleep so finally I woke up with pains in my side. They lasted for a little while after I went to the bathroom though and I had DOMs in that area from the deadlifting so it doubled the effect. Theres no unusual pain there now, just regular back soreness.![]()
