RE: the ongoing which sport is hardest argument...

a group made up of sports scientists from the United States Olympic Committee, of academicians who study the science of muscles and movement, of a star two-sport athlete, and of journalists who spend their professional lives watching athletes succeed and fail...
    ...
...identified 10 categories, or skills, that go into athleticism, and then asked our eight panelists to assign a number from 1 to 10 to the demands each sport makes of each of those 10 skills. By totalling and averaging their responses, we arrived at a degree-of-difficulty number for each sport on a 1 to 100 scale. That number places the difficulty of performing each sport in context with the other sports we rated.

Heh, you've never been inside a car whizzing around a track at 200 mph. Not only does it take some of the most extreme nervous input, it also takes a great deal of strength, endurance, and toughness.

I agree. I know some guys that have weightlifting/bodybuilding down to a science, many on this site. How many of them can drive a Indy car?

They are not just measuring physical toughness. It means degree of difficulty in an array of categories.

"I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

I'd agree with boxing being #1, although I think baseball should rank higher. Hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in the sports world. But perhaps catching one is easy, thus the not-so-high rating.

I definitely agree with most of the top 15. Especially hockey. That sport is just so damn brutal.

I just noticed they had billiards on there. The only thing I will say is billiards is by far the most analytic game. Golf?? Yes you have to use different clubs but there is only one ball to worry about. IN billiards you not only have to worry about the ball you are making but also exactly where the cue ball will end up after that. WIll that give you another shot. That shot may be easy, but it may leave you with a hard shot to get onto the next ball. By far I think billiards is the most mentally taxing game.

Yet a triathlon would probably rank in the lower half since it does not require much hand-eye coordination, nerve, agility, power, etc.

Other publications using different ranking systems have come to very different conclusions. The article http://www.gtcgymnastics.com/Toughest%20Sport.html at Men's Fitness ranked the Ironman triathlon as a close second to gymnastics and boxing as 6th.

Being that analystic, I think it should by definition not be a sport.

If billiard is a sport, then chess is one too, and a harder one it is. That match with Gasparov vs. Deeper Blue was very taxing for Gasparov, fatigue was probably one of the main reasons why he lost.
