Ok I've heard conflicting info.
Is milk good or bad for post workout? Explain why or why not please.

It's good; drink it!
I've heard casein has a slow absorption rate. True or false?
And does lactose give a quick or slow insulin spike?
These are the things I'd like to know.

My comments...
"I think Doc considers a quart of low fat milk an almost perfect meal. It's ratio is about 30/45/25 (32g Protein/48g Carb/36g Fat
assuming 1% milk). And since the carbs are mostly simple (lactose... milk sugar), you should get a nice insulin spike for
post workout recovery and growth. "
I was corrected by another poster...
"Milk is great, but it won't give you an insulin spike because lactose is low glycemic."
He is right... milk is listed at 34 on the glycemic index. So it won't give you an insulin spike. Take a high glycemic carb with the milk... like a banana (62 on the gi). Or raisins or cantaloupe.
its not the best for post exercise recovery meal as it has a low GI and slow acting protien especially if bulking. however its cheap and convienent.

what body said...and the new guy too..bullrider billy...*grin*
lactose is low GI, and casein is slow-release...so no...not ideal for post-workout.

Milk also contains whey, which is a fast absorbing protein.
Yes, but I believe it's only like 20% whey, which equates to 2g. per serving (or 4 or 5 per my servings heh), hardly worth mentioning
ok but say you mix a scoop of whey and some malto then you got imo a good spike

Don't you think you are picking every little food apart way too much? Or does the GI level of milk really make much difference for part of a post workout meal
High GI food post workout is not a necessity.

i love milk, does a body good, especially when bulking![]()

I dunno I find it better for cutting than bulking. Milk seems to give me a longer energy burst than (dare I say) oatmeal or **** like that, and it doesn't bloat me... plus it contains casein mostly... probably not the best choice when trying to absorb as much as possible in as little time as possible.
the word on milk? it's white, cold, tastes good and it does the body good.
uh oh, looks like tryska has something for billyboy here. hey guys, looks like the new guy is taking her away from us.

i'm going to start a stupid argument here just for the fun of it, upper pecs are best hit after lower pecs to better get a pump.(i don't believe it but i thought it sounded funny)

i would advise against milk whilst cutting.
It is a high calorie food and thus is good for bulking but not cutting.
yes but they are loaded with sugarsOriginally posted by pastdoubt
nonfat dry milk and skim aren't high calorie...??
thus bad for cutting

It's really good and has a ton of glutamine.
I drink skimed milk though but most of it is chocolate (artificially sweetened) milk.
