    Calorie question

Is it really neccesary to take in 3000-500 calories per day in order to grow?

I mean its the protein that makes your body grow ..... ? aint it?

Protein is only part of it. Your body needs excess calories in order to grow (under most circumstances). 3000-3500 may or may not be enough, I personally need about 4200 to gain weight.

It's person to person, but I have a very slow metabolism and I need 4k calories/day to grow.

Think of it like you're trying to build a house. Protein is the bricks and mortar, the raw materials. But the bricks won't put themselves togeter, calories are like the money that gets the construction workers to get off their asses and start actually putting those bricks together into a structure

Bad example, but you get the point (I hope)

Exactly as i would describe it you can have all the building blocks you want but nothing will be built without having the energy to do it

^ Ok .... so calories just give you the energy in order to lift the heavy weights?

The way I always thought of it was protein and nutrition builds the muscles and the excess calories are to make sure your body doesn't have to burn any muscle for energy. So if you are eating lots of protein but not getting enough calories its like taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back or something like that...

Yes, you basically want excess calories for gains. From these calories you should have ~1g/lb of BW in protein. You can have all the protein you can imagine, but ultimately you wont see gains without calorie surplus. Overall calorie requirements are different from peson to person however, and is partially dependent on genetics.

Maybe, maybe not...depends on the person. But you must be in a caloric surplus, IN ADDITION TO having adequate protein intake in order to grow.
