I can't believe this thread is still up and running.
A few things everyone should be able to agree on:
i. Not everyone who does drugs is a loser, a weak person, or somehow undesirable -- there are worse things than doing drugs.
ii. In general, doing drugs is likely to detract from achieving goals, for most people.
Another thing: Jennifer Garner has an incredible body.
are you trying to hijack this thread with the jennifer garner thing? hah yea i agree with what you said though i still wouldnt call weed a 'drug'
Theres tons of enjoyable things that don't have side affects....Originally Posted by Scott S

A couple things:
a) Yes, Jennifer Garner is hot.
b) THC is a drug. Aspirin is a drug. Caffeine is a drug. Alcohol is a drug. Chemotherapy involves drugs. Antibiotics are drugs. Still stand by your "i think drugs are bad"?
c) Name a couple, Ares. I'll find the side effects/risks.
Drugs are bad for you.. using caffeine, alcohol, and aspirin as examples in your defense is kind of a joke.. And chemotherapy and antibiotics? Well go through a round of each whenever you decide to light up....

Dunno who said that "drugs were bad", but the general idea here is that addiction and dependance are bad.Originally Posted by Scott S

Anything in life can be that way - it's best to be free of dependancies or to wallow in them. Middle of the road is hypocrisy and denial. I'm content with my choices on dependancy - some I'm free of, some I revel in.

Gyno man, look up one post above that one, I said that in reply to Scott's post.

You didn't answer his point, though. You just said using them in defense is a "joke".
(As a side note, I feel so sorry for the people here that are too young to have seen the episode of "Saved by the Bell" in which Jessie gets hooked on caffeine pills.)

So you do think that caffeine, alcohol, antibiotics, etc are bad for you?

This is what I was referencing. I was hoping he'd give a little clarification to his statement.

Scott -- It seemed clear that we were talking about substances known as illicit or illegal drugs, which, of course, caffeine, alcohol, and antibiotics are not. If you're going to broaden the term "drug" out to mean more than we were originally talking about, the whole discussion becomes sort of pointless. No one is going to deny that penicillin has fewer downsides than upsides, since it's saved millions of lives. When someone says "I think drugs are bad", they quite obviously mean the illegal and illicit sort, just as when someone says "Just say no!" they're not telling some Congonese mothers to deny their children free doxycycline in the hope of preventing malaria.
So if alcohol were suddenly made illegal, you would immediately shun it as being dangerous?Originally Posted by mike_mm
What about nicotine? Caffeine?
Hopefully you aren't saying that something is bad just because of it's legal status.

No, that's not what I'm saying. But those drugs are not illegal, so it's besides the point. My point is that people were talking about the drugs that are currently illegal, not the drugs that are legal. Presumably, if caffeine were made illegal tomorrow, I and many other people here would change our minds about the dangerousness of illegal drugs.
Then I ask you to do this, if you have the time and inclination:
Go investigate caffeine. See what it does to your body, it's potency, and it's propensity for addiction.
When done, tell me just how it's that different from meth amphetamine or cocaine.

Caffeine has a number of positive and a number of negative side-effects, but it's generally not recognized as having side-effects that are a threat to public safety. Search here if you're interested:

There's still a lot of research being done of caffeine and its effects.
But this is besides the point; I wasn't commenting at all on the merits or demerits of using law enforcement to cease drug use. I was simply pointing out that when people above were talking about the dangers of "drugs" it was clear what sorts of drugs they were talking about, and so I found Scott's attempt at broadening the definition to be unuseful. That's it.
Yeah you are right, drugs take people who might actually have potential and demolish them into school bus drivers and fast food resturant workers. I've never heard such a stupid assumption. Maybe you over looked former "drug users" such as your current President, George W., or maybe you forgot about Arnold's pot smoking days, or maybe you didn't hear about John Kerry, who used to smoke pot. Same with Clinton, Brad Pitt, and many other "high class" people who you obviously assume should have resulted to nothingness in their future because of continued "drug use." Ha, I think you are wrong.Originally Posted by crazedwombat

In many cases, it may very well destroy someone's drive.
But in other cases.. Well, look at pretty much ALL of the ancient greek science men.. Almost all of them used copious amounts of drugs, as well as the Chinese philosophers.
