At what weight did you start using STRAPS

And do you think it was a wise decision?

I start using them around 275 for shrugs, but dont use them at all when I dead lift and during some of my dead lift sets I get close to 400 so i clicked the 300 one

I weigh in at 165-170 and I use straps on DL at 315 and up. Although I just realized that I have been wrapping the straps the wrong way the whole time so they weren't even helping lol. I just found out: if you have your ands wrapped over the bar, then you start wrapping the strap from the underside.

Nothing wrong with usings straps though in my opinion

Congratulations, you could probably pull even more with straps though.

Some people don't have grip as a limiting factor in deads and shrugs...MOST do.

my hands are just too small to get a good grip around the bar I think. I really have trouble with the Tribar dumbells which have the thicker handles than the normal DB handles

My DL is only at just over 300 for reps but I haven't had many grip issues with it. Reset on the floor for each lift.

I've done a static hold for a couple secs with 7pps. no straps, just chalk.
    And I have tiny hands.

Deadlifts beat the sh!t out of my hands. I use straps so they don't rip open and bleed like when I competed. I use straps starting at 315. Doing 425 for 10 reps would be impossible for me without straps, whith them I can do it.

I haven't used straps yet for deads. I doubt I would since I rarely lift in heavy rep ranges anyway. I usually will use a double overhand grip until 3 plates per side and then move to mixed grip after that.

If you are having grip trouble and not using a mixed grip it will definitely help. I doubt I could pull over 400 for more than one with an over hand grip, but mixed elminates any grip issues. Sometimes with heavy weight I might be holding the bar with finger tips at the top, but I somehow manage to keep hold.

If you are planning on powerlifting, I'd say try not to rely on straps, otherwise, you can use straps on the higher rep lifts, and work on your grip seperately.

Well yes and no. I can't pull 500 not because of my grip, but because I'm not strong enough to get it off the ground and then lock it out. I think maybe you mean more reps can be cranked out because grip becomes a non issue when using straps. I can see how straps would help you lift "more".

Just do grip work and then grip won't be much of an issue. I don't use straps, but use chalk occasionally for really heavy lifts.

Chalk has been my best friend.

Years ago I began using straps with 405 for reps. Eventually I used chalk for my first time and it made the lift so much easier. I quit using straps for good and don't need anything but chalk.

i use them not really because of my grip/forearm strength (which can be a limiting factor after a while but not the main reason) but my hands hurt so ****ing bad i have to stop. my hands are so beat up from lifting they hurt like hell.

No, you read what I wrote correctly. I think the vast majority of trainees have grip as the weak link in the deadlift, even for singles.

Will chalk prevent my hands from being shredded by deadlifts? I do everything to keep the calluses down (razor blades, moisturizing, picking at them) and they still rip off.

Your hands only tear when the bar slides out.
So if you use chalk, you prevent the sliding.
    But once it does, ouch!

doing a bit of grip works is not going to let my grip strenght catch up with my back strenght.
my lower back is one of my strong body parts, my grips is not.

I'll use straps for shrugs but could never get them to feel right for deads. For deads I use chalk and it eliminates all my grip issues up to 405.

Thats interesting. I noticed a lot of guys at my gym use them on pullups/chins. Its always about Deadlifts when strap discussions come up on this forum.

If they help you to lift more weight/do more reps I don't see why you wouldn't use them. Grip isn't the weak link for me in those exercises, but it is for some people. You are doing chins/pulldowns for back, not for grip.

I use straps for anything over 455.

For other exercise i find chalk fine to use, but if using straps helps me get a extra rep out on pull ups. I would use them.
Alot of people seem so bothered about using straps on a BB forum. unless powerlifting, or doing other sport like rock climbing, then I would not worry about it.
I even use chalk on the leg extensions as it allows me to hold myself into the seat better.

Some of us trian in gyms where the grip on equipment is pretty poor and after a few sets get sweety hands.
