Does anyone dumbbell press more weight than you benchpress?

I'm talking about flat dumbbell press and flat benchpress. I can rep 185x10 on flat benchpress but recently I've only been doing dumbbells. I'm currently up to 85x8, which is 170 of course.

When I can't move up in weight any more, I'll switch back to regular benchpress and hopefully find that I've gained strength there. Anyone notice strength gains on benchpress after focusing on dumbbells for a while?

I did only DB for a few months, and when I did barbell one day I could do about 30 lbs more than my previous max for 3 reps. You'll probably see the same thing if you do DB for long enough. If you just do DB for a few weeks, your barbell may go down because you lose muscle memory. However, if your strength increases in DB, it will quickly increase in barbell as well.

I wish they made dumbells heavy enough....the dumbells at my gym only go up to 150lbs which is a freakin joke. As for barbell press I rep with 500lbs for 8 reps

I can DB press 110's*6. The last time I did BB bench(about 7 months ago) I could do 225*2. At that time I was pressing 100*4. I may not be stronger with DB's, but I'm close.

My shoulder presses are the same. I just finished my shoudler workout. I did 85's*8, the last time I did BB press was 170*6.

my brother can bench 25 lbs more w/ dumbbells than with bar, just depends on what you train more heavily.

it varies so much between people i believe it has to do with muscle memory of a certain excersise.. so if one only db press's and hardly ever bb press's than of course youll have a much tougher time with bb.. and vice versa

My BB bench definitely went up from doing DB's for a while. I was able to do 6x175 before on BB Press and after a month and half of DB's can do 195x6.

Flexx: 150?!! I WISH my gym had up to that. Our DB's only go up to 95!

You're crazy. The only reason that would happen is if you never used BB. It just doesn't make sense.

your BB should be more then your DB. The only reason i see this to be any different is muscle memory. If you do DB for all your life and switch over your DB might be greater then your BB, but if you keep @ BB for a couple of weeks you will soon have a better BB then DB.

ok last time i will say this.. read the above post..

i know plenty of people who dont use bb cause they like the feel of db's better as you get more muscles involved in that particualr movement.. but when they do use BB of course its gonna be weaker

Hey Flexx, where do you workout at? Just curious as I'm in London myself and I can't think of any serious serious gyms that would have DB's that big but I'll be the first to admit I don't know too many of them firsthand.

    Cheers!

    A couple thoughts

    1) You should always be able to press more with BBs. I'm pretty sure as you guys get stronger you'll start to see a larger difference. I doubt many people that bench over 400lbs for reps can handle 200lb dbs in each hand (if they even make them that heavy)
    2) cphafner-your shoulder strength is a lot higher than your benching strength, I'm the opposite, I can bench a lot (well, not a lot compared to Flexx), but my shoulder presses are weak
    3) Flexx, you're huge
