    Hand Stand Push Ups

Anyone here do hand stand push ups? I just found out about them and tried some, they're hard as hell! There's just something about using body weight for exercises along with using weights. So... anyone?

my training partner, 6`1 175lbs, can do them against a wall. He mil presses about 150 for 6-8, and DB shoulder presses about 70-75 for 6-8. Its just about body to shoulder strenght ratio. If its near 1:1 you can easilly do them. I'm on the other hand a long way from them.

Unless you don't have a piece of gym equipments, handstand push up should be the last exercise to try.

I would think that requires tremendous muscle balance in the body.

not if you do them against a wall. i would be amazed if i saw somebody just do a handstand with no support and start doing pushups. i think it was on a breakdance video actually, but i'd like to see it in real life.

If squats are superior to leg presses, then handstand pushups are superior to pressing weights, right? Closed chain exercises are good.

I did these when I was on the road (oct-Jan), they were decent and doable in a hotel room, but pretty brutal on me as I was bulking at the time (Weight: 270). Co-workers used to look at me funny when I used to unload the car at the hotel and see me carrying my dumbbells, bodybar and WO mat.

I did them against the wall to grab my footing and kept my toes against the wall.

Incline pushups are great, so these would just be a complete incline pushup. Plus, they'd make you either look real badass or dumb... I'm trying them next bench day.

i think you are misunderstanding the exercise. you are vertical upside down. and thus wouldn't be an incline pushup but would be a bodyweight shoulderpress. work it on shoulder day not chest day.

this would look really cool of you could just do them from a handstand and not against a wall... of course i cant do a damn handstand last time i checked...

of course the exercise seems pretty much useless. i think you would use less stabalizers and the like on this than tary presses because the weight is so well stabalized on its own. these would be like doing weighted push-ups as a better way to build your chest.

I could do 5 or so against a wall when I was 220 (had a bet with my dad, lol). But unless your doing them on a multilevel surface they will be severely restricted ROM. I would much rather do BB oh press and lateral raises for shoulder development.

Ooh Mix...that sounds like a challenge. =) I'm only 150lbs so handstand pushup is relatively easy for me. But that doesnt mean i should do it.
I can walk on my hands but that doesn't mean i should do it.
Instead of walking, i can hop with one leg, but that doesn't mean i should do it.

Let me add more to my comment, "...but if you can do a handstand pushup without wall/pole support, then go ahead... you're the man, and keep on doing what you're doing."

Unless you're already pressing more than your body weight, i personally don't really see a point of trying to do handstand pushup when you can do DB press.

I don’t think it is fair to compare squat and leg press to shoulder presses and handstand pushup. Handstand pushup is a bodyweight exercises that result in reduced ROM. If I have to do bodyweight squat with reduced ROM, I rather do leg press.

May be after all this is a misunderstanding. Because while you’re talking about free no support handstand pushup, I was talking about a handstand pushup against the wall.
