    Government Tailors Food Pyramid Concept to Lifestyles

    WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government has tossed its one-size-fits-all food pyramid -- and replaced it with 12 food pyramids to guide people to healthy eating.

    The new guides are each geared to different lifestyles and nutritional needs.

    The pyramids are pretty much the same shape, but rainbow-colored bands representing different food groups now run vertically from tip to base. They used to run horizontally.

    Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says the change will "help consumers understand how to put nutrition recommendations into action."

    Officials hope the changes will renew interest in healthy habits. People have steadily plumped up since the food pyramid came out in 1992. And a report in last month's New England Journal of Medicine found that obesity is reversing gains in life expectancy.

    A top department nutrition official says if the fattening trend doesn't change, "our children may be the first generation that cannot look forward to a longer life span than their parents."

    Sparing this from my withering commentary, it seems I have not been following the latest nutritional news as much as I maybe should.
    Allow me to complete my exam first tonight then look over this before I comment.
    Cheers

    rainbow-colored bands
    OMG the Pyramids are gay!

    I hadn't done too much of a search on this topic yet but the pyramid looks confusing to me and I have yet to find a proper explanation of the diagram.

    Well...it's better than it was. Customizing it to individuals, even to a small degree, is always a good idea.

    And while I can't get the personalization thing to work, this statement-

    What is a "Healthy Diet"?
    The Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that

    -Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
    -Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
    -Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.
    Gives me some hope that they're starting to catch up to more modern and balanced approaches towards eating as opposed to OMG FAT IS BAD EET UR CARBS LOL!!11

    i hate this government mandated health guideline ****...cant people just eat right? this pyramid stuff requires a PHd anyhow. i think when they try to teach this crap to little kids, it actually turns the kids against making healthy food choices.

    Right, because doing this--

    -Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
    -Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
    -Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.

    --teaches kids to eat bad.

    i just dont see why parents cant teach their kids to eat healthy instead of the gov. issuing health guidelines to be taught in school when kids could be learning something else

    So the way the visual makes it appear, is that fat people are at the bottom, and the skinnier people are at the top of the pyramid, and that all people, regardless of size, are gay until they reach the top where finally they will become straight white people. Okay now I get it!

    Where do the parents learn from ?

    half the people on message boards like this dont understand the basics such as energy balance and these are the people seeking out knowledge

    Have you seen the majority of parents in this land of ours? It seems apparent that popping out kids does not automatically endow people with proper nurtitional knowledge. Guidelines are definitely a good thing.

    Because a lot of parents are fat too, and would rather feed their kids McDonalds every night than actually cook something.

    Yeah, because the womens is out gettin' careers and stuff instead of in the kitchen. The woman should be baking me a pie!

    We can blame all those dirty fast food companies and advertisers or we can blame ourselves for allowing it to happen. I think the latter would make more sense.
