i was wondering how good swimming was for cardio and maybe what strokes would be best for it
Swimming is excellent for cardio. Freestyle is probably the best tradeoff for effort versus distance you can go. It doesn't really matter though. Any stroke that gets you to you target heartrate...

as long as your getting your heart rate up for a good period of time it can be a good cardio workout.
