White Plains, NY (anyone familiar with the area?)

I just accepted a job in White Plains and will be moving to the area within the next 2-4 weeks.
I dont know the area at all and am looking at different towns to live in within a 25 minute commute.

Its a full time position but doesn't pay super great. I am planning on renting for a year or two and then possibly buying a place depending on how stable I feel the position is.

I'm looking for a "fun" area where there are a good amount of bars/clubs in the area, ideally within walking distance of each other. Hoboken would be ideal but its outside of my budget. Budget is under 1200$ per month in rent.

    Any recommendations?

    Geoff,

You could consider Jersey City, it is still a bit cheaper than Hoboken, but not as fun. You could also check out Stamford, CT which is only about 15 miles from White Plains. Some parts of Yonkers are nice. Some parts of Queens (Woodside to name one) could also be good.

Hoboken is no suburb, 100% urban.

Good plan. The housing bubble should burst within the next year or two (it already has in Britain & Australia), so you should be able to get a better deal then. I just hope your new position isn't housing related.
