I've always thought that to gain muscle mass you had to do about 3 sets of 6-8 reps and reach muscle failure on every set. So I'd often lower the weight after each set to enable me to reach failure at the right time.. So my routine would consist of usually 4 exercises, 12 sets total, failure on every set. By failure I mean my muscles cant lift the weight anymore. I'm usually sore for many days after these routines.
Ok, so someone just told me you should never go to failure! It actually inhibits muscle growth! This cant be true can it? In my favorite movie, "Pumping Iron", they always lift till they are so tired they cant even move the weight. Isnt that the secret to success?

beefcake!!! beefcake!!!
this is actually an interesting question. I don't usually reach failure on every set, but usually by the last set of that paticular excercise my muscle is spent. I don't think it's good that you lower the weight so that you reach failure the next set, you should be moving up every set not down. Maybe you should start with a lower weight and move up or take longer rests in between each set.
heres a good one

the search box has been highlighted on pic.
its just that there are numerous threads that debate this subject every week. Just read a few and if any queries bump up a old thread.

Lifter4life I slightly disagree in that I believe you should stick with one weight for your sets. Why waste energy using the 80lb DBs when you could have used the 85's or 90's?

I usually start with possibly the heaviest i can lift the that X amount of reps and keep the weight or move down in weight for the next set.
I do a regular pyramid and go to failure on the last set every other week.

I train like you suggested in your original post EC. However I don't do 12 sets. 6-8 for large muscle groups and 3-5 for smaller isolation lifts. Has worked well for me, check out my journal if your interested more specifically.

By the way, I searched the forums for the word "failure" but found nothing... any hints as to what to search for?

Squats work better than supplements.
"You know, if I thought like that, I'd never put more than one plate on the bar for anything, I'd never use bands or chains, I'd never squat to parallel or below, and I'd never let out the slightest grunt when I lift. I always thought the more you lift the bigger you'l get, and keep it to around 6-10reps. So when your say on the bench and your about to hit rep number 10, you should find it hard and it would be impossible to hit 11 ' if u catch my drift '.
