I woke up unable to move my neck even 10 degrees without excruciating agony.
Waiting for cab to hospital at 5:30 am. ****, this sucks. Guessing no benches or deads for me today. I didn't even lift Friday because my right rotator cuff was feeling a little taxed... but that tug of pain when rotating my wrist was nothing compared to this. Sigh.

Damned if I know. It started yesterday when I woke up. As far as I can tell, my gf rolled over onto my chest and forced it flat (I sleep sloped at a 45 degree angle). I figured 'ow, yeah, whatever' and tried to stretch it out a little, got a deep massage, put some ice on it. Still didn't feel great all day. This morning I got to wake up in a world of 'I... can't move.' panic and hurt.
It took 20 minutes to roll over out of bed and get to a phone. I'm sitting in my very expensive back and neck supporting chair and it's no picnic. Slightly more comfortable than standing, slightly less comfortable than the side-kick to the solar plexus I took once in a competition.
So much agony centered around where my neck meets my left trap and extending halfway down my back along/beside my spine that I feel like I'm going to throw up.

They're going to give you muscle relaxants.
And, hopefully, some really, REALLY good painkillers.
Oh, maybe valium!

I hate painkillers. My ****ed up system is vulnerable to most drugs but for some reason resistant to painkillers. I was turning down Demerol (?) shots after my appendix was out because I was on the largest dosage they give and it was doing nothing for me. WHen I get a headache or migraine it sticks around because no amount of advil, tylenol (1 through 3), exedrine, or anything else I've tried does squat.
Muscle relaxant sounds kind of nice, though. Cab's here (about time).

Have you been to a chiropractor before? Once I went my migranes are almost gone and I have less problems with my neck, back, and shoulders.
From the sounds of it you could have done exactly what i did last year, i tore a a muscle in my neck due to shrugging too heavy, so everytime i turned my head i was in agony. its not serious and it should ease up after a few wks, but training with it is out of the question, unless you fancy sitting in your very expensive back and neck supporting chair for even longer.
No muscle tear... just a brutally stiff neck was the diagnosis (one of the worst they'd ever seen). Shot me full of the most powerful anti-inflammatory they had, had me knock back two potent painkillers, gave me a note saying two days off work, prescription for two days worth of anti-inflammatories and a week's worth of muscle relaxants, and off I went.
The painkillers, sadly, did nothing. I'm used to that, though. The anti-inflammatory has it so I can get most of my range of motion on my neck with no more pain than when I'm doing nothing... and that pain is down to a dull roar.
No gym for me today. Hopefully Wed I'll be able to go full out (though I'll probably pass on heavy shrugs for caution's sake). I don't really want to take a week.
If I wake up as trashed tomorrow as yesterday and today I have no idea what I'm going to do. Posture-pedic pillow? Sleep in a neck brace?![]()

How about a MRI of the neck to make sure you didn't herniate a disc?Originally Posted by ShockBoxer

That would imply some sort of thoroughness on the part of doctors around here. Upon hearing what they did I've gotten: a) They should have done an x-ray to rule out menagitis and b) They should have done a MRI to make certain there was nothing structurally wrong.
NOpe, shoot me full of drugs and kick my ass out the door. Time at hospital: 4 hours. Time with doctor: 4 minutes. Time doctor spent diagnosing me: 10 seconds "Here?" *poke* "OW! Son of a ..." "Stiff neck. Next." Spent more time ensuring I had a drug plan...

I have trouble with that sort of thing quite a bit, nothing lately thank god but for a while there I was waking up with a "pain in the neck" once a month, brutal ones too, just like you are describing.
There was never much I could do about the pain except muscle relaxants, heat, super hot showers blasting directly on the injury while stretching it slowly and rest. I now use a posture-pedic pillow and swear by them. I find that I need to support my neck when I am sleeping, not just elevate my head like most pillows do. Try to keep your neck fully supported and your spine perfectly straight while you sleep. If you don't have a posture-pedic pillow try rolling up a towel to make it fit into the curve of your neck when you are lying on your side.
Now pray to the gods that this is a rare occurance. LOL

Don't worry, it's probably nothing serious. Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was just walking down the street when my neck suddenly locked up. When I woke up the next day I couldnt move my neck at all without some badass pain. I popped some Ibuprofen, used an ice-bag for a couple of days. I then used tiger-balm a couple of times, and it was good to go after 4-5 days.
this has happend to me 2 or 3 times. Just iced it up.. followed by heat. then went to chiropractor and eventually it healed.
Never Giving In.

Well, whatever it is the anti-inflam is working nicely. Makes me sick to my stomach but restores like 75% range of motion easy. Prescription on the anti-inflam is today and tomorrow. With rest I'm hopeful that will be enough to reduce it to an annoyance.

Take the anti-inflams with food!
I took them with a half pot of kraft dinner and a can of tuna. I have a drug sensitive system. It's part of the whole ****ed up digestive system I have going on. I suffered a near fatal central nervous system overload off of 1/4 of the prescribed dosage of a drug a few years ago (the side effects hit me so hard that after two days I stopped taking two. Then I started cutting that one pill in half. Two weeks later... boom... near catatonia.) It really brought the point home about how screwed up things really are.

only thing bad about that is...well pretty much no pump on workout days with anti-Flamms

Metoclopramide
Side effects:
Drowsiness.
Twitching or muscle spasms.
Decreased blood pressure (hypotension)
Rapid or writhing movements of lips and tongue (extrapyramidal effects).
Confusion.
---------------------------
This is the bastard that nearly got me. I got all those in spades. My muscular control degenerated rapidly. I started shaking, felt like my skin was on fire all the time, felt weak as a kitten, got uncontrollable twitches, barely slept (was so tired but skin was on fire), started becoming delusional, was confused all to hell, and finally my body just couldn't take it anymore and I collapsed into an unmoving state. My eyes were open and I was aware but that was about it.
After two days of that I came around enough to move, with assistance. It took a month afterwards to do more than sit lifelessly in a chair.
Fun thing was... I called the doctor after a week on the drug, concerned about the side effects, and she said it was fine and it would pass and to give it another few weeks. I don't know who was the more idiotic there... her for undervaluing my concern or me for believing her.
