I'm not dismissing the artist's work... but come on. 24 million?

I swear, if somehow I ended up with enough money to throw 24 million at ANYTHING, I would hire someone and pay them 50,000 a year to remind me whenever I stop and look at something like this that there still is no cure for cancer.

but its not cement, thats authentic rare brushed stainless steel sheet metal!

One of the big gyms down the road has walls made of that stuff. I'm pretty sure some of the support poles are even wrapped in it. I don't think they paid 24 million though.

LOL Wierz. Maybe I'd pay 50,000 dollars for it if a few people died while making it or something...

The artist has to be totally cracking up inside when he heard about the bids.

Looks like it's made out of tin foil.
Best way to cheat on deadlifts...

Stand there for a few minutes, then pace back and forth a lot, huff and puff, wait until everybody's looking. Approach the bar. Back off. Approach it again. Back off. Get some water. Chalk up. Approach the bar again. Then spray some more chalk around. Wait until people start losing interest. When nobody's looking, pick it a little off the floor, and slam it down. Jump up and yell "LIGHT WEIGHT BABY". Then give high fives all around. - Belial

Quick! Offer the owner of that property 5 million bucks. Then send it to the auction house and you could maybe get 350 million bucks for it! You can call the piece of "art": "Cathedral of Squats and Deads--First Treatment"

You should see the ugly piece they have outside the American embassy in Canada. I don't think it cost quite $24M, but I think it was $17M and it is way uglier than that piece of work.

I'll take a pic if I am around that area within the next couple of days.

Just leave a big knapsack next to the sculpture when you leave to divert their attention.

Ya right. If I tried to go near that sculpture I would be shot.

there is no point arguing if it's ugly or not, it's quite an intreguing peace. THe work itself may not be worth the money, but when the work was made and erected, thats quite a big deal. I personally dont know much of the artist, but i'll say its quite a medetative peace. Also i can almost garantee that the stainless steel is done for a reason, the steel is very much intouch wtih nature, the way the light bounces of the peace at certain times changes the sculpure and it's medetation, much like the studies of Claude Monet, who did many paintings of the same object at different times of the day to see how it interacts with the object, the church is agood example.

So did you have to touch it with your hand when you picked it up to wrap it?

I can only say i completely agree. showoffs with way to much cash to burn , its disgusting. Im sure the artist himself would find that an incredible waste of money.

RussianRocket, do you think that stainless steel is in touch with nature because you think that it really is or because you read it in a "reputable" art book?

I'm sorry but I don't see how something like stainless steel is considered in-touch with nature. The steel itself is forged by man.

i dont read "reputable" art books, art books have systems. I dont like systems so i dont buy art books unless i have too.

Having stainless steel part of nature is not a big stretch, some artists use resources that will ultimatly destroy themselves as time goes on, Stainless steel will last a hell of a lot longer. And no art should be judged by a photograph, you have to see the sculpure by itself, i'm sure if you sat and actaully observed the sculpure through out the day you might change your mind. I am willing to say that the sculpure tries to combine the buildings in the background with the nature surrounding it, it bridges technology and nature in the middle, but thats my take on it. I haven't seen the sculpture in person, i might change my mind after i see it, i dont know untill i do (i wont)

ps. steel is made from iron, iron is made from iron ore, coal and limestone (which are natural)

Well of course the stuff that stainless steel comes from is going to come back to something natural, I think that's a property of pretty much all things.

Yeah I suppose that we do have to see it in real life to judge it. I don't know how the auction went but perhaps one guy just fell in love with it and didn't want anyone else to even be close to buying it so he threw in that load of money.

In a field where beauty if relative it does raise an eyebrow when a portion of people are willing to give so much money for a piece of artwork that physically didn't take much effort to make. This, and many other signs, have always led me to believe that the art industry is saturated with "elitists".
