well this is a working set using 176lb. ive been doing deadlifts like this for a while but i dont think my form is right. please HELP!!!!!!!!!!

your using to much of your back, i rarely do this excersize but i know you can really hurt yourself the way your doing it with a lot of weight. keep your arms strait and bring the weight up with your legs, like your comming up from a squat.

You're doing a romanian deadlift, but you're taking it to the ground each time. Work on getting your ass down lower and driving with heels and hips.
While we're on the subject I've actually had a question about deadlift.
How do you reduce the workload on the lower back? I think it helped a little for me to look up when I first drive up but at very heavy loads it's been trivial. Is one supposed to kinda like drive up AND back? I mean obviously starting off with the back as vertical as possible would probably minimize the work on the lower back but if you were to kinda like drive upward and a little back would that work? I've always felt like there was a chance that I would drive up and back a little but would end up falling backward, but on the other hand I THINK the weight would counter-balance this... but I'm not positive. Anyone able to clarify for me?

Why exactly are you looking to take the workload off the lower back in a deadlift?
Because I often feel that it is hindering my progress. If I wanted purely a lower back/hammy exercise then I would have done SLDL. But for regular deadlift I want to "try" putting more stress on the legs to see what it's like. Last time I did them my legs didn't feel fatigued very much at all while I could hardly keep my body upright due to beatdown that my lower back took.

Deadlifts work my back. My legs are pretty fresh after doing them. Makes sense to me as it's a back exercise.
Sumo stance squatted down as far as you can and back as vertical as possible will really hit the legs. Note that "as vertical as possible" still means that the lower back is going to be doing a lot of the work.

I thought a video of Magnusson deadlifting might help this thread.

assuming this is suppose to be an conventional deadlift:
-your bending over too far close to paralell when you start off or bring the bar down
-your legs tend to lock out before the bar passes your knees
-the lift is done with leg drive, not your back
-get closer to the bar and bring your hips as close as possible
and just in case, your grip should be slightly wider than shoulder width and outer feet should not go pass shoulder width.
i like this video, it reminds me of fantasia because of the way he prances around for some reasonOriginally Posted by khari
SLDL are a leg hitter. Conventional deadlifts work my back way harder than my legs.Originally Posted by gator

Aren't SLDL's mainly hitting the back of your legs, while deadlifts should be hitting the entire leg especially quads.Originally Posted by jkirkpatrick
The point I was trying to make with that video is that nobody who wants to deadlift a lot of weight squats down as much as you're all telling this guy to.

I don't see what's so terrible about his form. I posted a vid of me deadlifting last winter and got mostly positive feedback on it. I have had a few PL'ers, all of whom could DL 600+, critique me in person and they could find no serious flaws in my form. They had pointers, but nothing to suggest I was doing something fundamentally wrong.
Here is a link to the video I posted awhile back:

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, I am just posting mine for the purpose of comparison, because I don't see what is so bad about the OP's form.

His form is absolutely fine. The only problem is it's too light![]()

First half is right; I disagree with the second half. Sure, I can feel my hamstrings giving out near the end of the set on deadlifts, but my back is much more exhausted than the hamstrings.Originally Posted by gator
I hardly feel it in quads at all. It's not like a squat, where your legs are supporting the weight throughout the entire ROM. Back takes over from legs on a deadlift. Maybe your legs are very weak relative to your back strength and that's why you feel it so much in your legs?
Compared to you guys, I think I bring my hips a little lower then SpecialK. I feel fine doing it but I end up scraping my shins.![]()
I haven't done them for a couple of years since football training, but always thought they were supposed to hit the quads more. However i did feel it in the back much more, just thought I was doing them wrong...guess not.
I'm sorry but that video is just too funny. A bunch of 300+lb men jumping around like a bunch of psychos. The music is perfect. It's soooo funny watching him run up to the bar and all. Oh yeah and LOL @ him creating a mess with the chalk.Originally Posted by khari
