    Anybody do Sumo Squats?

I've been trying to improve my squat form, and it's coming down OK. Today I tried sumo squats, at least that's what I think they were, where your stance is much wider with feet pointed out. I was able to lift much more, had more control and better balance. Any reason to think that I would be better off substituting these for squats? Or should I just stick with traditional squats?

The wider your stance, the lower your ROM usually is. Thus, you lifted more weight easier.
How wide are we talkin here? I don't know what your regular stance is, so I'm not sure how wide is "wide" for you.

I've been using a slightly wider than shoulder width stance.

I can squat MUCH more weight sumo style than narrow. I go to parallel both ways but sumo is much easier for me. I'm sure it has to do with your build.

SUMO is definetly easier but it's good to mix things up once in awhile.

You should be able to use more weight with a wider stance. It will involve your glutes and hamstrings more. Close stance hits my VMO and forces me to be more upright.

I vary my stance from shoulder-width to ultra-wide. In PL, I use a wider stance - well outside shoulder-width. I use a suit and although I would probably bring my stance in a little if I went raw, I would still be wider than shoulder width for competition.

I hit 430*5 with a slightly wider than shoulder width stance. With a really wide stance I am hitting 385*5 consistently. Granted I used to use a belt before I changed to sumo, but I think my quads overpower my hip flexors (even though they are quite large), which come into play a lot more on wide stance than you might think.
    bests:
