    Home networking question

And where better to go for advice than a weight training forum, right?

    Here's the scenario:

I have a home PC. I have a Sonos. I have a wireless DSL modem/router with 4 ethernet ports. I'm going to get an NAS for music, photos, and backups.

I want to set my network up so Mrs Stagg can hook her laptop in, and the two PCs can share a printer/fax/scanner thing, monitor, and files. I'm figuring I'll get a wireless keyboard and mouse for the home PC.

Can I do this? Can you tell me how?

Is there a way to get everything to work on the wireless network, too?

In laymans' terms, if you could.

Definitely possible. I could do it with the stuff in front of me, but I don't know it well enough to give directions online. Unless, of course, you're paying.

The short answer is 'Yes... if all hardware components support wireless connectivity.'

It's a basic peer to peer network. Only the wireless demand threatens to flub it up.

Plugging everything in should be the hardest part of getting this to work.

Geeks are cheap... find a local geek, pay him $50 for the hour it'll take to sort it out, and you're done.

All of the file sharing you want to do b/t pc's can be done by setting up the laptop to use the same workgroup as the main pc.
    Right click on "My Computer"
    Left lick "properties"
    Click the "Computer Name" Tab
You should see a button that will allow you to change the name of the computer or to join a domain. The laptop should try to join the main pc's domain or workgroup, whatever you have set up.
To share a printer you just set up both pc's to use whatever printer you have.
    Click "Start"
    Click "Settings"
Click "Printers & Faxes" Follow the wizard for setting up a printer.

To get the laptop to work off of the wireless network, the laptop will need to have a wireless Network Interface Card.
    "Start"
    "Settings"
    "Network Connections"
You should see the wireless card listed under the "LAN or high-Speed Internet" heading.
Make sure it says "Enabled" then double click on it. depending on what kind you have, it will usually search for near by wireless networks. It should find your router and display whatever network name you gave your network in your routers internal page. You should be able to click on it and connect to your router as long as all of the wirelss settings are set up correctly on the routers internal page.

It's hard telling people how to do this over a forum, so I hope I didn't confuse you. Was just trying to steer you in the right directions.
I was assuming both pc's are running WinXP.

Attach the printer to the home PC. Attach the PC to the router. Attach NAS device to router (or just add disk space to the PC -- cheaper). Enable wireless. Share drives and printer on home PC. Viola.

That gets me the files and printer. I think I can handle that.

How do I share the monitor between the home PC and the docking station for the laptop? Is there a switch or something I can buy?

To run two computers off a single monitor and kbd/mouse, get a KVM switch:

There are slightly cheaper pure video switches too. Just seach for "vga switch."
