    Can't Decide

    Ok so here's my story.

I can't decide on whether or not i want to bulk up and get stronger, then cut down on my bf%, or cut now and then continue with a slow bulk.

I am male, 16 live in Queensland, Australia, and around March/April I Hope to be competing in the U18 Australia Post AFL Queensland Country Championships. I'm around 6 foot 2 inches, and 87kg (I think around 191-194 pounds).

AFL requires muscular power and muscular strength, and a good sprint. You need to be able to land a big hip & shoulder on someone and get back up and chase the ball very quickly. AFL players are known to cover anywhere up to 25km in just one game. Lol sorry trying to explain it for some who don't know about the game.

Anyway to the point! I want to know if you guys reckon I should continue to bulk to keep my strength up, or cut. Only thing is I also have to keep my Cardio ticking over.

Opinions? If you want me to answer any other questions just ask!

I base my cut or bulk depending on how I look in the mirror. If I can see a six pack then I would bulk if I can't then I would cut. You said that your an athelete so you bulking/cutting cycle would be basied around your season. I would bulk to get your size up and strength then preseason I would cut down to get into the best shape you can. hopefully this helps you out.

You could still bulk. You'd just have to eat more. Simple as that.

    Bulk.

It's more fun. You get to eat more. You get bigger. You get stronger. You eventually get fat. When you get fat, do a hardcore cut. Then Bulk.

Are you in season right now? because I wouldn't recommend limiting my carbs during season because your performance might suffer.

You're 16 years old and playing (by the sounds of it), a very physically demanding game.

    Eat.

Yeah this is the perfect time to get into the best shape before the season. I wouldn't eat exessive cals I would just eat what you need. Good luck with the preseason.

For teenagers with such a fast metabolism, bulking and cutting is simply bullshėt. Just eat a lot, work out a lot and drink a lot of water. Don't even think about cutting, because if you exercise enough, you'll burn away the fat anyway.

hey at the moment im pretty confused with my whole workout. Usually i do one isolation exercise for every muscle group and then the bench, squat and deadlift. Legs are naturally quite big. I need a very strong upper half as well as strong legs to cover so much ground and sprinting and so on...maybe i should use a push pull thing? I enjoy going to the gym, but can only make it 3 times a week at the moment...

    Any idea's for some help?

I think you should worry less about size/looks and focus more on strength/conditioning.

    Form follows function.

In AFL i juniors i always played a more defensive ruckman role, but now in seniors I was being played as a forward pocket. Normally these guys are much smaller in size than I am and quicker. Towards the end of the season though I am was made into a Centre Half Forward (CHF). Who usually, along with the Centre Half Back (CHB), are the most solid, strongest guys on the field. At 16 playing with men i need lots of size and strength too :P
