dead lift or stiff legged dead lift

I've always done regular dead lifts, but when I look for the correct form on the internet all I can find is stiff legged dead lifts. I've heard they work your hamstrings better, but in the pictures it is always shown being done with your back parallel to the floor. I tried this and it really strained my back. Does anyone know how to do these.
