    Push Ups?

OK lets make this short and sweet. What are the benefits of doing push ups? Can one expect any gains from doin just push ups? Would it be more reasonable maybe to only see no gains but maybe some definition? I've been thinking of starting a morning routine of pushups when I get up.

    What can I expect?

You'll see gains for a bit if you're not very strong. But once you can do 80 push-ups without a sweat, the only thing push-ups will be good for is doing more push-ups

Push ups along with big gun will impress most chicks =).
Doing pushup allows blood flow and can help aiding recovery.
One can expect to gain endurance, also, one may see slight gain in bench and other pressing exercises.
Pushups won't directly help you gain in definition. Definition is achieve by developing the muscle under the fat, or by dropping body fat.
YOu don't really need a morning pushup routine. You're better off spending that time making your meals. But hey it's never hurt to try.

Bodwyeight pushups is one thing. But weighted push ups is another. Try doing push ups with an 80lb weight on your back. Will give your tri's and chest a tremendous burn. I tried it with 154lbs on my back. Wooo. its way harder than benching 154 lbs. (which is very easy for me before I get flamed) lol

That's because you're doing part of your body weight plus the 154 pounds...

    It sure would!

    Make sure your backpack is

    1) Strong enough to hold the weight.
    2) Yes cushion them
    3) Make sure the backpack is tight and the weights are centered in the exact middle of the backpack. I found that using a dumbell didnt work with my little backpack, cuz it just kept falling off my back. Really pised off my parents below me :P

How the hell did you get 154 lbs to stay on your back, or in a back pack.

after reading this thread, i went in my loft and pulled out my hiking backpack and slapped 45lb of iron in it and done 3 sets of 10 push ups.
Seems to be be really good for chest. I dont know why i didnt think of it?

lol. It wasnt 154lbs of iron. it was 154lbs of my gf. She was on my back.
Thats some good pushups with 45lbs. Get a person to stand (or lie) on your back, and do them. Its damn hard!

so your girlfriend weighs the same as you? anyway yeah my wrestling coach would make us do weighted pushups somedays, 3x10 with a 45 on your back AFTER you didnt bench press... tough stuff.

Try inclined push ups with your feet on a chair or something that elevates them or diamond push ups.

Stay down for 4 seconds then go back up you will feel like your arms are rubber after 20 regular and 20 diamonds

A few months ago in gym class i was doing pushups and my friend was dickin' around and sat on my back. He was 170lbs, that was harder than hard. Haha.

Anyways, i see no reason do to pushups if you have a bench or dumbbells to work out your chest in a better way... unless you just want to be able to do more pushups.

If you don't have any workout equipement and can't get to a gym though, then i'd be doing pushups with weight on my back too. lol.. definitely better than nothing.

I do a set of pushups as a warmup to doing bench.

It's failry easy to put one 20kg/44lb plate on your own back. More than one requires someone to basically stand over you to make sure it doesn't slide.

There's another exercise where you lie on your back and put yourself up on the bar above you. Forget the name.

Perhaps you should walk up to a nice 60kg/132lb girl and ask her to sit on your back. To show your appreciation, you could take her out to dinner.

I usually have my daughter (80 lbs) sit on my back while I do pushups...

I also have my feet elevated about 2.5 feet above the ground....

There is also the handstand pushups (against a wall - at 210 lbs, its a good workout)...

    Just my .02...

Besides weighted & incline pushups.. I've found that clapping pushups are most beneficial... it's the only really heavy way I have found for Plyometrics for the chest.. especially wide grip.

LOL.. I don't know if I would ever try to "launch" the BB off my chest on a standard BP...
