I saw kid doing 100 reps!

I came across some teenage kid in my gym who was doing an assisted lats pull up machine. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you set the machine to 100, and you are only pulling up 50 pounds... I weigh 190 so I have the machine set to 80.

Anyhow, I'm waiting for my turn to use the machine... his set never seems to end for 10 minutes... when he is done he informs me he did 100 reps! I took him aside and warned him of the dangers he is putting his muscles through... I told him to increase weight and do 6-10 reps. The kid was only 14 probably, did I give him the wrong advice?

Your advice was fine. If you can do 100 reps, that is way too little weight.

What dangers? If he wants to do 100, let him do what he wants unless he asks for advice.

1st question.. are you experienced enough to offer him advice?
2nd.. Does he want to take advice?
3rd.. Does he know what his goals are?
4th.. Does he want to tell you his goals?
5th.. Do you want to offer advice on his goals?

It's not like he had bad form? Or that he was doing it wrong was it?

Unless someone is hurting themselves... sometimes it is better to be on the friendly but cautious side before offering advice. Especially with a youngster...

Perhaps offer him a spot first? Or give him a compliement? Or maybe ask him why so many reps?

I don't think the kid was doing any damage... no more so then the damage we all do to our bodies when training... and our bodies repair and adapt.

Perhaps he wants to be a mountain climber? Those guys build up their pullup strength to do hundreds of reps.. on their finger tips.. or just hanging there.

Just my 2 cents... but then again, I'm a little more cautious..

Next time you see him, challenge him to a pose off, dominate him, then with your newly garnered respect and authority, school him in the art of proper weightlifting.

When you go out of your way to offer unsolicited advice, you should probably know what you are talking about first.

I love it when someone presumes to know what someone else's goals are, and further backs it up with incorrect information...

I have both sorts of people at the gym - those who go overboard with the reps, or who use two spotters to help them bench 315; and those who offer unsolicited advice. The kids who need two spotters - I let them go. If they injure themselves, they've put themselves on the path to learning. But I was offered advice on back training once myself. I've been doing Pendlay style rows - start the bar from a dead position, and return in for a pause before beginning the next rep. I've been doing those for sets of 5 with 220, and they've really helped thicken my back. This kid tells me I shouldn't be grounding the bar, because it ruins what I'm trying to achieve. He was maybe 150 soaking wet, no bigger than the average 10th grader. I'm the same height, but about 80lb heavier. The look I gave him must have suggested something - he hasn't done it to anyone since.

Kids who are 14, like you, only have one goal.

    Taco Bell.

I'm sure his poorly-planned advice attempt was accurate in this case.

It's mainly just useless. I honestly don't know what his goals were, but most likely I'm guessing he could make better use of his time in the gym unless his goals are to increase his 100-rep strength...which is kinda pointless.

Well I forgot to mention the kid's form was getting worse and worse and his final 10 sets looked like he was straining to move... maybe I should have said nothing... but he seemed to take the advice to heart...

How do you have bad form on pullups. You can do every variation under the sun and it's still working somewhat.

Not everyone is always training for strength or size.
