I'm thinking about buying a squat rack and was thinking about the Vulcan Racks II from Ironmind http://www6.mailordercentral.com/iro...sp?number=1217
...until I ran across this: http://dmart2.stores.yahoo.net/posqrapsinst.html
I realize it's a cheapo, but if it would hold 500-600lbs, it would suit my needs perfectly. Thoughts?
What I'd REALLY like to do, would be to make a set of racks like this:
...but I'm not real handy...
A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

I've got a simlar one at home, Its OK. I'd really like a half cage kind of thing to do heavier concentric GM's/Grinders etc. My biggest grief with it is I need to make a band platform to attach bands too.
I'd make the oly rack if i had bumper plates.
I'd stick with the vulcans.

stay with the Vulcans you know they will hold up.
I've never used them, but Jesup Gym http://www.jesupgym.com sells the same ones for $125 delivered.
If you like the ones in the picture, why not make some?
Thanks.
this is basically what i have only mine is weider brand.... cant really beat your own cage in your garage

A friend has the body solid rack that Jesup sells for $125 delivered. It works fine for heavy weights. One thing you might not like is that the flat area where the bar rests is just barely bigger than the bar diameter.
Also the uprights are stamped sheet metal, but like I said, my friend uses it without problem.
Thanks for the input. I'll probably just hold out for the Vulcans.
Race,
What kind of weights is your friend using in the racks?

You're using 400+ lbs on squats right?
I'd go with the higher quality rack. Even if the other one can hold 500lbs I don't think it'll last you as long as the Vulcan one.
BTW, how do they load the plates with that home made rack!

Good point... If the weight was light, it wouldn't be a problem, but when it got heavy, I don't know...Originally Posted by Canadian Crippler

Maybe they load all the plates except the final two per side, clean it up, then load the last 2pps?

I'll say this -- I've seen lots of people regret buying cheapo workout gear, but I've never seen anybody say, "Damn, I wish I'd bought something cheap instead of this thing from Ironmind."Originally Posted by Sensei

I personaly would get a rack where you can do pull ups, bench, squats, shrugs, ect...I think they are an awsome bang for your buck deal
Sensei, at most 400 something pounds.
Sensei, another thing. Took me forever to find this link:
http://www.bwproducts.com/fitness/eq.../racks/r04.htm
This is a more affordable "Vulcan" style rack. I would have ordered one if I didnt find my stands on ebay. Made in the USA.
I'd say nay on the second one as well. I think the same brand that someone on this forum was telling me when he assembled it (it was a power rack by that company) the bolts actually dented the tubing.
Then he went on to tell me it was holding up great...lol
I got a real solid rack from parabody for 400 bucks. Look for a local parabody (lifefitness) retailer, and go check it out. They're all over the place. It's rated at 1000lbs, and the shop guy told me it's considered "light commercial grade."
How do you make the squat racks like the one shown in the first post?
Register on the crossfit boards. Lots of xfit discounts available and I recently saw a discount for a squat stand like the vulcan.

Sensei, do you have a platform and bumpers?

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just hold out for the Vulcans.
Mix,
I'll register at the Crossfit boards although I really doubt I'll be doing any of the WODs anytime soon!!!
I have access to platforms and bumpers, but don't own any.

Just wondering why you want this kind of rack without a platform.
No power cage?

Oh, I see. Well, I plan to invest in some bumpers if I start setting up a home gym, yes.
It's mostly a space issue, but I really don't ever see myself training at home exclusively anyway - the heavy suited/shirted attempts would be done at the gym.
