    What are muscle "knots?"

Whenever I get a hand massage or back massage, my girlfriend always finds these "knots" and works them out. What are these, what are they caused by, and is it okay to massage them out?

Knots are basically an area where the muscle tissue is in spasm or contracting. Massaging the area seems to help the muscle relax. Massaging knots is a good thing.

i was told is has something to do with muscle weakness in the particular area. when i had surgery on my right shoulder, during the recover i developed quite a few behind the shoulder(shoulder blade area) they told me it was b/c my shoulder was weak and the surrounding muscles had to pick up the slack and it puts excess stress on those muscles which causes these knots to develop.
having them massaged out is a great thing(wish my girl were strong enough to)

It is muscles that have not relaxed completely. They can be caused by stress, microtrauma, muscular imbalances, etc. You can live with it, no doubt, but a tight muscle can be injury prone.
A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

    Exactly.

Massage is fine for these areas. I get minor lower back spasms on occasion. Heating pads also seem to help tremendously.
    I know you're half-crazy, but I wish you'd go all the way.
