Ligament at L5 Disc is torn

So i went to the massage therapist yesterday for my lower back problem. He said I had torned an L5 disc ligament. (I forgot if he really said L5 but he pointed at L5 on the poster, if not L5 then probably L4 or L6 :O ...lol )

He said I shouldn't arch my back, I should keep it straight. Next time I visit I should tell him what kind of lifts I do at home.

He also recommends me to not work if possible; because I lift boxes at work. So i'm going to ask manager if I can take 2 weeks off from work. Unless a torn ligament takes less than a weak to heal, PLEASE tell me!

    Other questions:

For a torned ligament in the lower back, should I use ice ? Or should I use heat ?

    Other stuff:

He also said I have a mild case of Scoliosis... OHHH DAMN WTF !!!!

And he also said something about some kind of muscle imbalance (I forgot what muscles he said, but it's somewhere around inside the stomach) Itk inda looks like two posterior chains; I asked him but noo he said the posterior chain is different, he said these ones are like inside the stomach. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please tell me.

You should completely ignore this massage therapist's advice and go see a real medical professional.

For the record, vertebral discs aren't "torn". They're herniated or bulging.
    I know you're half-crazy, but I wish you'd go all the way.

It sounds like your massage therapist knows more than a lot of doctors. He must be GOOD...LOL

I agree with razorcut. If you've got pain, go see a doctor.

If you want a massage, go back to that guy.

the most anyone on here can recommend you to do is to take a break and not do anything too demanding. Ligaments will take a bit longer to heal so I wouldnt be expecting to do anything too strenous just yet. Do what the doctor recommends and take it easy.

And it sounds like an imbalance in your lumbo-pelvic hip complex.

hoser, yeah my right hip crackles when I lift my knee up to my chest and put it back down. I guess that is why it crackles?

He also recommended me that I should get an ultra sound done. Don't know why...but yeah.

    Here is the story...

Well After visiting the massage person, I stopped lifting for about a week and the pain went away.

    Then I started lifting again.

As soon as I started deadlifting and squatting the pain is coming back lol DAMNIT!!!

Even though I took off 50 lbs. off all my lifts to start over again...WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!

When I have a cold...I go see a massage therapist. If I had cancer I'm also sure a massage therapist could fix me up and give me the best advice!

Dude, ditto on razorcut's advice. Go and see a doctor before you do more damage. Hint...if your disc is bulging and starts compressing yoru spinal cord you could lose mobility experience numbing and eventually lose full mobility. But when confronted with the possibility of becoming a paraplegic, yeah I think I'd trust a massage therapist

Lordy, you really do need this site to kick you in the arse Skinny...

In case you haven't gotten the message (no, not 'massage') yet, REST, ICE, see a DOCTOR.
A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

Hehe, I already saw a doctor, he even let me go to a radiologist to get an X-ray done in my lumbar area, and the S.I. joints. They didn't find anything.

Also I asked for massage therapist. So I visited one, he gave me a massage. He said I could of torned a ligament. Stopped lifting for a week. (But as soon as I started again I had to stop for like a month again...read sig heh)

BTW after a few days after the massage, I could arch my back WITHOUT THE PAIN ANYMORE!!!! w00t. Now it's coming back. It came back right after I started squatting and deadlifting heavier numbers.

I plan on paying 90 bucks for a full physiological (**** w/e that is). They test your whole body or whatever and they find out what's wrong with it. I have to pay 90 bucks because I'm 18, not in school so my dad's benefit plan doesn't cover me anymore.

But before I do that....Yeah I'll ice my lower back for a week and see what happens.

Here's a little secret.....vertebral discs don't show up on X-rays. The only thing you can check on a X-Ray is bony alignment. You can have the largest disc hernation known to man and still have a normal Lumbar X-Ray. Sometimes the curvature may appear off, but not always.

What kind of X-ray should I get done?

I was thinking MRI, or a cat scan. But I feel weird asking my doctor about it, since my lower back pain is not that bad. Although I know for sure it will get worse if I continue lifting like this.

MRI is the gold standard for investigating disc abnormalities.
