I have recently switched from DB bench to BB bench but I can't lift nearly as much weight with the BB. With DB press I could lift two 22kg DBs (44kg total), but with BB I can only lift a 30kg bar, and I'm doing the same number of reps for BB and I was with DB.
The BB itself only weighs 10 pounds so that still doesn't account for the huge difference.
It's usually the other way around. I can bench 230 lbs, but only bench around 120-130 lbs with dumbbells. I would say it's your stabilizers but I never heard of this problem before. Maybe your arms are not used to the motion since you can't move your hands laterally when you use a barbell.Originally Posted by JConrad

You have the strength, but you lack the coordination right now.

Coordination, lack of practice, and, maybe, increased range of motion with the bar are probably the reasons why you do more w. DBs.
A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

Thanks for the reassurance fellas. Its good to know I'll catch up soon, as I'm defintely sticking with BB bench.
Just a thought could grip have anything to do with it. such as where he's placing his hands on the bar?
This is what I think as well. People praise DB for their range of motion, but when it comes to DB bench mosr people use less range than when using a BB and touching their chest.Originally Posted by Sensei

200lbs
Bench - 270x5
Squat - 350x5

Dumbells are generally harder to use, they require alot more stablizer muscles then a flat bar bench would and you cant use your momentum off of a DB bench.
I can bench well over 300 pounds on a bar, but 100 pound dumbells for sets say 3 sets of 6 whoop my rear end while 200 pounds on a flat bar I could easily rep out 15 or more times.
