Back Help: I cant do pull ups

I can do 1, maybe 2 underhand pullups, but what I really want to do is be able to do an overhand, wider grip pull up.

The Pull up assist machines in my gym are really terrible.

Would doing chin-ups translate into being able to do pull-ups? or should i stick with heavy lat pulldowns.

I just need help on which exercises and reps i should be working with.

    Thanks

Yeah, doing chin-ups will definitely help you to do pullups. Why do you want to do wide grip?

Shoulder width or narrower works lats better. Wide grip just wrecks your RC.

Try self-assisting by setting the squat rack at eye level, or do something Anthony told me about: jump chins. Jump to "up", lower on your own. Repeat.

Or step up on a chair, get someone to lower it and just do the negative, more or less what biult said but a bit simpler. Why not just stick with the close-grip chins and build your strength up, thats what i do. Try to do another rep every/every other week. Also try doing them at the beginning of a workout when your backs fresh and get someone to help you do 2 assisted pullups. Do 2 chinups with 2 assisted one week then do some close-grip pulldowns the next week with slightly higher reps (I like 3x5 or 3x4-6 with that stirrup handle or whatever it is, the one with the handles that are parallel and looks like a v from the side)
