Does anyone know a good program which would allow me to take a still from a .avi movie file? Preferably free and easy to download. Any help is appreciated.

pause + print screen. Paste to paint and save as a jpg or gif
I don't know about you but if I try to "print screen" a video, the result is a black area at the place of the actual video.
I use BSPlayer as a video player, it has a "capture frame" option.
That's a result of video/HW overlay. Turning it off will solve that problem - usually an option in most players.
