Possible to have selective lactose intolerance?

Sometimes dairy bothers me, sometimes it doesn't. I drink like 3-5 large glasses of milk a day, no problem. But I have ice cream and 30 min later I'm on the toilet. Protein shakes bother me, but whey protein bars sit fine with me. I'm confused.

Go see a food allergist. I have the same issues sometimes. It's odd. I'm going to see a food allergist soon for similar reasons as you. Seems like one day something bothers me and the next day it doesn't. I'd like to know what the heck is going on inside my digestive tract.

Don't know if I want to have to pay (no health insurance) to have someone tell me not to eat ice cream.

You're going to get a lot more out of it than someone telling you not to eat ice cream. Maybe you're sensitive to certain sugars (ice cream or the sugars or sweeteners in certain protein powders used for flavoring).
