    lifting in college

I'm getting ready to live for the University of Texas in a few months, but i might have a problem. I've been working out at home and generally the only lifts i do are bench press, deadlift, squat, bent-over row, and clean and press. I've had alot of success with these lifts and i don't want to stop doing them. But i've heard that some gyms don't have an area where you can do these lifts (deadlifts, bent-over rows and clean and presses). Does anyone go to UT that might know what the gym looks like? What are decent replacements for these lifts (if any at all) either mechanical or free weights?

There are NO replacements for deads, squats, cleans....
I suggest finding a little area for yourself to do it.

At my university gym there are a ton of dumbells, benches, and machines. But only 2 squat racks and 2 small areas enough room for two people to do their deads and or rows. Find a little nook for yourself and do these lifts.

I can assure you, all university gyms have squat racks. I cant imagine one that doesnt.

    Two things.

    1) If its any kind of college at all it should have a decent gym. I'm going to a very secluded school in a mountainous area and they have a better gym then the one I currently go to.
    2) If you're gym is inadequate you can easily find a public gym not far from where you are.

you dont need a platform to do those... as long as they have a rack, then you can do them. The cleans might be tricky, but just find some open space and do them.

My college gym has one squat rack. But if you're school is anything like mine, you have no need to worry about a line of people looking to squat in it.

    UT Austin?

There will be several gyms. Probably most will be good.

I got to UTSA this year but will be at UT Austin next year. I am joining the powerlifting club who has their own room/gym so I personally won't have a problem with equipment. But I know that there are 2 huge gyms that have squat racks: Gregory Gym and the other one by the stadium.

It is the biggest university in the US (as far as I know)...so I am positive they have squat racks and mostly everything you need. Although kicking the curlers out of the squat racks will be a whole different story.

Do you really need a specific area to do Deads or Bent Rows? I could understand maybe an OLY platorm for cleans and presses and a rack for squats but surely the others could be performed just about anywhere? =S

I was just going to say that. I've seen people do cleans standing just outside the squat rack, so that's always an option.

Powerlifting is big in Texas, so even if you can't do it at your Uni gym, there should be some good powerlifting gyms somewhere around there. Austin is a pretty big town.
