    College Expenses

So I'm finishing up at a local community college and heading to a university this fall. College life is ****ing expensive. I'm really starting to get stressed as hell about everything. Me and two of my buddy's are getting an apartment in campustown, which are very nice, but $500 a month. Thats 6000 a year... Thats not even paying for classes or food. To me that is crazy. I've had to pay for all my school so far so I really dont have much money. I'm going to have to get out TONS of loans. What about the rest of you? Other than you lucky bastards that had mom and dad pay for most, how did you guys deal with all of the expenses? So far I have no scholarships, but atleast I only have 2 years left of college and no debt so far...

I got a lot of grants because I'm an orphan, but still needed 11,000 in loans for my first year of school.

I'm currently between my first and second years, and I'm considering going to a community college for the next year, then going back to a big school.

Yea man community colleges are a great way to go. So much cheaper, and you can just get all of the general requirements out of the way. Great way to save money, but they are definitely not as exciting.

Loans, Loans, Loans. I'm going to be 6 figures in debt when I'm done with law school.

Bank of America was the best place I found for loans. It sucks to do it, but it's a good debt. It will help you to get a better job and get paid well. Did you fill out your FAFSA? Make sure you drain the government for you education. It's what all the college kids do.

I had to jack up my credit card, and take out personal loans for my college. My parents paid a total of one thousand dollars for everything. I pay for all my weightlifting stuff (food), car, school, but they let me slide pretty well on rent now. So I pay for everything except for rent. It's hard as ****.

As for dealing with the debt, if the loans are small: less than 1300 and you have good credit try taking out a personal loan. The interest might be a little higher, but it's a different form of borrowing money so your credit will go up. Also, don't use your credit card for expenses if you have one. Lay low on partying and stuff like that if you don't have the money.

I got out with $22k in loans. I worked a lot through college and had some grants and scholarships. It sucks. I make decent money now, but that $250 a month loan payment sucks.

Being a minority is awesome, being a poor minority is even better. So far my first year of college is almost completely paid for. Depends on how many more scholarships I can get.

Should be interesting to see how college life is actually like next year.
    Complication breeds desperation.

Almost completely paid for for me, unless I really dick up and lose my scholarship. I'm a little worried that other expenses besides actaul room and tuition are gonna be more than I'm expecting though.

If you have a full-ride they should pay for tuition and board. If not, then you still won't be paying but maybe 5k a year at a public University.

Wrong-o, bud. I don't know if you've looked at tuititions lately, but these days it costs a minimum of $7-10,000 per year for tuition+room/board at even in-state public school tuition levels.

that's tuition+ room/board. I was only saying room and board. I'm not too wrong. Noticing I pay for my college and with the financial aid I had it was 6k for tuition, and a little over 5k for room and board. I opted out of the room and board.

When I said full-ride I meant tuition only.

No, I don't have a full ride. I have a scholarship that pays for about half, and then my parents are covering the rest.

I meant other expenses like food outside of any food plan, clothes, spending money, etc.

Oh, I thought in another thread you said full-ride. If you have a good food plan they should have some good cafeteria food. And I would say for clothes and spending money you'd need probably 400 dollars a month or so if you want to live lavishly.

My friend is an oral/maxillofacial surgery resident (go through both dental school and medical school) who has had loans since college... he calculated that he will be about $500k in debt by the time he starts working!

I'll be 100k+/close to 200k by the time I'm done with law school. This is even after the scholarships I got in undergrad. The law school doesn't offer scholarships until after your first year, unless it is an academic one.

Since I can't have a car, my first year or two at least, I can sell mine this summer and of course won't have to pay insurance/gas anymore either for the next year or two. Hopefully that'll help cover most of the spending money I need.
