Crosby Extends his Contract with Pens!!!

Crosby signed for 43.5 Mil over 5 years (8.7 mil/year). Shows some character from him signing below what he could have gotten. 19 years old and dominates...glad to have here in da burg!!!

Sidney Crosby is the youngest team captain in Penguins' history. The Penguins have signed center Sidney Crosby to a five-year contract extension. The deal is worth $43.5 million, an annual salary-cap hit of $8.7 million.
It will take effect in the 2008-09 season.

"Sidney has proven himself to be a dynamic player and team leader at a very young age, and it is exciting news for our franchise and our fans to have him under contract for the next six seasons, through 2013," said Ray Shero, the Penguins executive vice president and general manager.

"When you've got a guy who leads the league in scoring and wins the MVP award at the age of 19, you know have someone very special. But Sid also is a tremendous asset for this organization as a leader in the dressing room, and as the face of our franchise in the community. And the fact that he wants to be here long-term is a great statement about the city of Pittsburgh and our organization," Shero said.

Crosby is the youngest player in NHL history to record 100 and 200 career points. He was named captain of the Penguins on May 31, making him the youngest team captain in league history.

"I want to be here for a long time," Crosby said. "Individual honors and scoring championships are great, but my No. 1 goal is to win the Stanley Cup. I'd love to be a part of bringing the Cup back here to Pittsburgh."

I know. I remember hearing that during the lockout a few years ago espn or some other network filled their NHL time slot with some bs like a dog show and actually had better ratings. And they still keep going into US markets that couldn't care less about hockey. Let's see what happens when the Preds move to Kansas City.

Not to mention all of the sponsorship deals he's already got.

The Penguins are going to be a very dangerous team for years to come. I think the should trade Malkin for some D, though. I think this years playoffs showed that success in the NHL requires grit, and a North American game. Granted he's just a rookie, but he dissappeared in the first round against Ottawa because the play got a little too physical for him.

UMMM...Crosby played awesome against Ottawa...He had 3 goals and two assist in 5 games...should have been 4 goals but the one got called off b/c of a fight. Not trying to take anything away from the Sens they played insanely well up to the finals.

Great signing for the Pens, pretty much a no brainer.

Got some friends who work for ESPN and there is a very sore spot that the Hartford Whalers left town to Carolina back in the 90's. The upper management looked at them as their team and when they relocated they have had a vendetta against the NHL ever since.

If you hate hockey, all I got to say is go to a live game and feel the intensity and I guarantee that you will become a fan.

This is great for the Penguins and the city of Pittsburgh. The new salary cap will take a few years for it's effects to take root, but they will, and when the playing field is leveled by evenly spread talent, and not by ridiculous officiating, and clutching & grabbing, the league will be better off for it.

As far as hockey goes (when figuring that hockey plays make pretty low money compared to other sports) he's making an assload.

The thing I like about the contract is he could have gotten over 10 million...but he isnt like a lot of other athletes and got greedy. He would rather leave some room to sign some of the other upcoming stars we have like Malkin, Staal, and Fleury. He was in kind of a hard spot...he had to balance 3 things; 1)Trying to get what is "fair" for him (considering he is the best player in the world); 2) He had to try and leave room for future signings to keep this core of talent in Pgh; 3) He had to try and keep the Players' union happy and not sign for too little. I think keeping the palyers' union happy had to be the most difficult...if he signs for too little then it bring the bargining power way down for other superstars in the league...how are you gong to ask for more $ than the best player in the league??? So overall I am very happy and thought he did an awesome job with this contract...only if we can get this attitude in other greedy a$$ athletes....just to think he is only 19 years old too.

Sorry I missed that...haha

I agree malkin couldnt handle that style of play for the first 3 games. In game 4 and 5 he started to play a little better but i will agree with you. But to trade malkin wouldnt be the smartest thing either...this kid will be awesome...I think this year is going to be a big year for him...100+ points.

As for our D...we made some moves this year and i think we aren't too far away from haveing a solid unit.

Although, I agree Malkin will only get better and I'm sure he'll have a phenomenal season. But he strikes me as one of those Europeans who just disappears in the playoffs. The new NHL is going to be much more physical and I don't think he can handle it.

I'm also willing to bet he's going have an injury-prone career.

If he adds some serious mass in the offseason, however, he might make me eat my words. I believe he was 6'4'' 185 coming into last season - that just won't cut it in the NHL.

I aint gonna lie...I was thinking that too about Malkin. Lets hope OG Gary Roberts can teach him a thing or 2 before he leaves. That is one thing about a lot of these European players...they lack grit and heart at times.
