I tried out the Bod Pod today...

I found one in downtown Chicago and figured I'd give it a try. I had no illusions about being low, I know I'm fat; I just have lost a bit of weight and am interested in knowing how big I really am, under the fat. I just wanted to know how low in weight I can get.

It blew my mind:

Fat: 136.5 lbs (44.9%)
Lean: 167.3 lbs (55.1%)
Weight: 303.8 lbs

I was surprised because I had done a range of different measurements online, which ranged from 28% to 40%. I had a calipers test, last year at 360lbs, and I was 33%. It makes me think that a lot of our measurements are bunk... unless this one is, too =)

The guy said that this one bodybuilder came in; the bodybuilder took off his shirt and he was big and muscular, but had a six pack. The guy said that the bodybuilder was PISSED, lol.

If you get a chance, you should try it out; pretty enlightening =(

Interesting. I have never heard of them, but I just checked it out and it looks like their clients include some hospitals and Universities in Cambridge, England.

Either way, I've never been a huge fan of trying to work out my body fat. I go by weight and by the mirror and the mirror as the most important.

Who cares if you were told a month ago you were 40% and then the same day another system measures you at 35%. Should you be happier? You look just the same in the mirror and to other people

best test ive ever used for fat is the 'pinch an inch' on the belly (i.e. if you grab a slab youre fat), or simple looking in the mirror like dan. most times you neednt get cute with things, just acknowledge youre fat and do something about it.

The pinch an inch does not work so well for many folks, myself included. I carry the majority of my body fat in the stomach and that is carried internally. Result, I am really fat and can actually see ab definition. Now looking in the mirror is definitely the best solution, except it makes me want to cry.

I am fat and doing something about it.

For me, it gave me an idea of my ideal body weight. I'm 6'0 300lbs but if I had less than an inch to pinch, I'd be 185lbs. I am sure that there are a BUNCH of guys on here that don't have an inch to pinch and they are 220lbs+. I just wanted to take away any notions of me being muscular =) ... =(

They have a bod pod at my school, it's 20$ to use it. I've been thinking about doing it just for the experience.

Just make sure the person who is running it knows what they are doing. I did a few studies in college that involved the bod pod and it's easy to mess it up if you don't set it up correctly.

We have one at my gym that we can use free (courtesy of the Mayo Clinic) and Ive done it about a half dozen times now. I usually do it every 3 months. Allegedly its supposed to be within a percent. The printout it gives you is awesome and has TONS of info about your body beyond simply your bf%.
