omg guys stop squatting now please

srsly guys, srsly

So at the gym yesterday I was listening to two guys talk in the locker room about lifting... blah blah curls, blah blah range of motion for biceps, blah blah. But then one guy talked about how amazing deadlifting was and so I listened a little more, as well as took a look to see who was talking. Deadlifter was about 5'6 and low bf% apparently some type of gymnast... kinda gay, but whatever, he likes deadlifts. The other guy is about 6'4 black dude talking about bicep range of motion and such.

So anyway, the tall one starts saying how squats are super bad for you and how when the top of your calf muscle presses against the back of your thigh, it's just going to cause your knee to snap apart, so you should never squat for that reason.

Now I know probably 99% of you guys squat, and a bunch of you probably 405-600+..... just wondering, have any of your knees every completely unhinged at the bottom? I'm thinking to be safe we should all just stop until this is looked into more thoroughly.

~~

Yeah... that was good for a laugh. I didn't say anything though, just walked out & drove to work. Just thought I'd share

Nah man, his physical trainer dude explained it to him, so he totally doesn't need squats.

All the trainers gasp when I go below parallel on my squats. Then I get the lecture about how I'm going to damage my knees. I wish I had a few handbooks on kineseology around when they do this. It's starting to get old!

A dangerous exercise that breaks knees.

Don't ever attempt. Stick to 6 variations of curls in the rack instead, thanks.

Oh and that's per day, 4-5 days a week, obviously.

Good thread.

So, in other sad news, I was prepping to take a personal trainer cert test (Cooper) and was reading the material and came across the section talking about how squats are inherently bad (as well as other full ROM BB movements). It is very sad that this is what is being taught to "trainers".

I'm think they say that for liability purposes. It's much easier to outlaw squats (and other BB movements) than to take the time to teach people how to do them -- let alone teach people how to teach other people how to do them. A significant amount of time would likely have to be spent teaching a trainer how to properly coach a squat in order for the certification company to avoid liability in the event that a trainee gets hurt.

Im currently doing my personal trainer certification aswell. Here's a couple of excerpts from the nutrition textbook:

'Another side effect from a high protein diet is that calcium absorption and retention is decreased, as the kidneys work hard to excrete the extra nitrogen"

"Side effects of a low carbohydrate diet include ketosis, headaches, fatigue, nausea, bad breath and decreased performance"

I read something legitimate a couple years ago that described damaging the knees the same way the guy at your gym described. I wish I could find that article.

The thing about it was, it's talking about bouncing out of the squat--the whole "reversing a door hinge" thing. It's legitimate. So..don't bounce. Don't be an idiot.

Either way, we'd all be foolish to believe that squats won't damage the knees over time--even with good form.

Well technically that last bit about low carb diets certainly is true, but that's only if the low carb diet is sustained long enough for severe ketosis to occur. Thats why cyclic low carb diets are so popular, to avoid those nasty side effects.

I simply build in time to go the ER after every squat workout to get my lower legs surgically reattached. It's pretty much a ritual now so I've gotten used to it.
