Why is it that chains beat me up so badly?

So I experimented with chains last week today. My normal deadlift sets, after a warmup, go like this:

    5 x 275
    5 x 285
    5 x 300

Well last week I added chains to the first lift. Two 14lb chains. I'm not really going to speculate on what kind of weight that added to the lift, but I understand I very most likely went over my previous max of 300.

After the workout I was completely obliterated. More beatup than ever before, evar.

Was it simply that I lifted over my max? Or is it something about the chains?

Well if you added 2 14lb chains the you added 28lbs if they came right off the floor at the top of your lift.

It's probably just that you worked with heavier weight than you're used to. Most people are weak off the floor with a strong lockout so maybe this time your lockout actually got challenged...

That's just your CNS saying "hey, I'm toast!" Don't worry, it's normal. It's good to f*** with your CNS from time to time. It helps you adapt.
