Are pushups and situps/crunches?
And is there a recommended amount you should do per set, or recommended amount of sets?
bodyweight exercises have their place
a good example of bodyweight exercises kicking your ass is some of the CrossFit type stuff, for example:
50 bodyweight squats
as many rounds as possible for 20 minutes
It really depends on what your goals are. I wouldn't make them the focus of your routine if you're trying to gain lots of strength, but throwing them in every once in a while couldn't hurt (and as brutal as the example I listed is, it's fun to challenge yourself)

Effective at what? Being able to do more pushups? Building strength?
Pushups have thier place but bench press is superior in my opinion. Crunches are good ab work, but keep the sets short and heavy like all others. Do weighted crunches or incline to increase the difficulty.
