The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

At-home workout today. They've been programming a lot of met-con/cardio stuff lately at the box and it's really cutting into my strength training g so I skipped today.

A little short on time today..

    Bench Press

    95 x 5
    115 x 5
    135 x 5
    155 x 3
    165 x 3
    185 x 1
    200 x 2 (PR)

First time I've benched over 185 in 6 years. Felt real good so I grabbed a second rep. It's benching in a power rack with safety pins..makes you brave..lol

    Deadlift

    95 x 5
    135 x 5
    155 x 3
    185 x 3
    205 x 3
    225 x 3
    255 x 3

    Out of time.

I need some assistance work. Gotta get started earlier.

    Squat/Front Squat (kinda bounced around)

    95 x 5 (Back)
    115 x 5 (Back)
    115 x 3 (Front)
    135 x 3 (Front)
    165 x 3 (Front)
    185 x 3 (Front)
    205 x 3 (Front)
    225 x 3 (Back)
    255 x 1 (Back)

    Power Clean

    115 x 2
    135 x 2
    155 x 2
    175 x 2
    190 x 2

Felt good to workout after the gluttony, although i only had one plate. Doing it again tomorrow though. Might try to get a workout in tomorrow morning to ease the guilt..lol

This was at home. I reassembled my 7 x 6 platform so I don't damage the basement floor. It's almost 2 inches thick. But, I don't have bumpers so my nice sharp plates put two big dents in my platform..lol. Gotta put a couple stall mats on my Christmas list.

Did some pullups, strict press and curls at home last night. Yes, curls. First time in about 3 years..lol. Had my 6 year old daughter Deadlifting (17lbs..lol) and she hung from the bar a few times and held herself up on the dip handles. Enjoyed herself. I'm hoping to lead by example.

    Today..

    WOD

    5 Strict Press
    10 box hops (24")
    15 KB Swing (53)
    10 Push Press
    20 Box Hops
    30 KB Swing
    15 Split Jerk
    30 Box Hops
    45 KB Swing

13:51. This one got real bad in the 3rd round. RX was 155. I can push and split that but not strict press it, but I wasn't allowed to go from 115 press up to 155 for the rest of it. So..whatevs.

4 sets of GHD (hamstring focused)
    Banded pull-aparts
    Shoulder mobility/chest stretching (posture work)
    Lunges x 40

My little knee injury has returned for some reason. I almost think it's because I started wearing a pair of shoes (Nike Lunar) that I hate and are uncomfortable. I'm so accustomed to at or near "zero drop" shoes I think maybe the Lunars jacked me up..lol. I found a good deal on some Free Run 5.0's so hopefully that'll help. A sore knee jacks up everything but bench and press.

We're doing Cleans tomorrow and I really hate to miss out. I feel like I have a 225 PR on deck.

Thanks dude. I'd like to get both kids into it a little bit, just to appreciate the value in fitness so it'll always be there nagging at them..lol

    WOD

    Front Squat

    95 x 3
    135 x 3
    165 x 3
    185 x 2
    205 x 3
    225 x 1
    245 miss
    245 miss

Oh well..lol. 245 is my PR but with Oly shoes. I plan on getting some for Christmas though.

    Metcon

    12-9-6-3-3-6-9-12

    Burpees
    KB Swing (70lb)

60 Swings, 60 Burpees. 8:18. Wow. This got REALLY bad around the second set of 6. Things started to go black just a bit after i finished. Really, really bad..lol.

If you're ever interested in trying a short "Crossfit" workout, try that one.

Thanks dude. I'm tryin to keep at it. Progress always seems to follow hard work..lol

    WOD

    3 Rounds

    1 minute HSPU
    1 minute Squat @ 155lbs
    1 Minute of 3 pull-up, 3 dip
    1 minute Ring push-ups
    1 minute Rest

A bunch of stuff I suck at. Pull-ups/dips were a sub for muscle ups, my HSPU were a joke and my ring push-ups were only 3 at a time. Back squats were 10, 10, 12. Not too bad on that one.

    Power Clean

    95 x 2
    135 x 2
    155 x 2
    175 x 2
    185 x 1
    195 x 1
    205 x 1
    215 x 5 misses
    215 x 1 (matches PR)

The Power Cleans weren't too bad. I was pulling too fast on the 215's so once I slowed down I got it. Not too bad after all those squats. 225 is on the horizon.

    5 sets GHR
    Band Pull Aparts

Man it really sucks to suck at something..lol. I dunno if I'll ever get handstand push-ups. I've GOT to build up my strict press.

    At Home Workout

    Deadlift

    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    165 x 3
    190 x 3
    215 x 2
    230 x 2
    260 x 1
    280 x 1
    290 x 1

BB Row (first time I've rowed in YEARS)

    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5

    Chins

    3 x 3 x 3

Short workout but felt good. I purposely skipped the regular WOD at the gym today. I didn't see the physical benefit to 5 sets of 20 overhead squats @95lbs with 20 seconds rest (running 50 meters) between sets. Anymore these days I just skip this kind of stuff. Some people consider it cherry-picking. I just think I could get more benefit from NOT fatiguing my shoulders to the point that my pesky right one eventually dislocates when the muscles give out (as it tries to do when I OHS max). I just dont see the point in a workout like that. And quite honestly I see almost zero use for OHS in-general except for as a display of skill, which is perfectly fine but not what I'm after.

All of this made me think that I might just reprioritize my gym visits so they'll be second to heavy lifting. I'll go on days when I want a met-con or if the gym WOD has a heavy lift comparable to whatever strength day I need. This is essentially what I've been doing the last few weeks but making this decision removes the guilt I have for not showing up more often lately..lol

sets of 20 OHS seem pointless regardless IMO. just sounds like a fantastic way to get hurt. good decision.

oly shoes make a big difference. I squat so much better now with them..

Good choice Woody. More and more I'm less impressed with what I see come out of CF Boxes. Contrary to what this site owner and many others like him will admit, there are a lot of affiliates doing dumb shit.

Glad someone agrees fellas. It's not the most popular sentiment and I don't mean to bash my gym because i do enjoy it most of the time. Some of these WODs just make no sense to me though.

At-home. Skipped the WOD today because it has heavy deadlifts and I did that yesterday before I remembered we'd have them today..lol

    Bench

    95 x 5 x 2
    115 x 3
    135 x 3
    155 x 5
    175 x 5
    175 x 5
    175 x 5

    Close Grip

    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    155 x 5

    Dips

    BW X 5
    X 5
    X 7 (maxed)

Threw 25 Squats in there somewhere. Meant to superset them but forgot..lol

Short and sweet. I don't go downstairs until the wife and kids leave so my workouts are short. Gonna try to rearrange things a bit and get some more time.

Dips have improved drastically. Might start adding weight for small sets.

interesting.. IMO, there should be one coach doing the programming for the reason you voiced above. Typically, it's the gym owner. The other coaches are there to go through the classes. If they want to program, they should open their own box. You know?
