The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Thanks Coke. it's simple but effective, aside from the low ceilings..lol

yeah yeah Jake..it may have been a pathetic PR but it's the first progress i've made on OHP in a long time.

The paneling is from the previous owner. We're in the (slow ) process of painting it and if it looks awful I'll drywall. It's gonna be more of a rec room though so it doesn't have to be phenomenal. Plus, my rack and platform instantly take care of any ugliness.

That rack is so nice. I got it brand new for $400 from a local place. It's Parabody by Life Fitness. They don't make 'em any more. It's way more sturdy than most racks I see in that range too. Dunno why it was so cheap. And I gots a beastly Powerblock bench. I'm trying to pick out some gear for my sister to get for her husband. She has a $1,000 budget and I'm struggling to come up with enough gear without going over..lol. The price of weights has skyrocketed.

A rare weekend workout. I feel very motivated lately. It was a short one, just while wifey had the kids in the bath. I like to stay upstairs when they're home and wanting to play, even if it's barbies..lol. Especially after those shootings. Luckily I was just playing sick patient last night for fake doctor kit. The 4 year old loves giving shots no matter what's wrong..lol

After that, I spent two full episodes of dexter on the floor with the lacrosse ball releasing trigger points and working on mobility. That stuff is as important as workouts lately. Best $2 I ever spent. I think I'll take it to work this morning.

    thanks for the read sir

    Tuesday

    Hang Snatch
    Power Snatch

    Never got over 135.

    500m Row x 3

Horrible day at the gym. Crap workout. Started with a little inter-personal conflict, which is very rare for a guy like me. Extremely annoying. I'm losing interest in organized Crossfit by leaps and bounds lately. I hate that because I've really enjoyed it but everything runs its course for one reason or another I guess.

    At-home Today..

    Deadlift

    95 x 5
    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    195 x 5
    225 x 5
    255 x 3
    275 x 1
    290 x 1
    300 x 1

    Chins

    BW x 3, 3, 3, 3, 4

Superset with BW Squat x 25 and defecit sit ups x 10 (total of 125 squats, 30 sit ups)

    BB Row

    135 x 5
    145 x 5
    145 x 5
    145 x 5

    EZ Curl (lol)

    60 x 10

Hearing you about the crossfit, there are peaks and valleys with any endeavor.

Way to regroup at home with the deads and all.

Thank you sir. Just tryin' to keep on keepin' on.

I quit Crossfit yesterday. I've really enjoyed it but I felt it was time to move on--just wasnt enjoying it anymore and going there was starting to get in the way of what i'm trying to do. I'll still be incorporating a lot of what i learned there into my workouts but my main goal is strength at the moment; funny how things change. Maybe I'll do a drop-in here and there though and catch up with my homies..lol

First workout in a week. Always hard to work one in during the Christmas week.

    At home..

Squat (first one in the new skwat shooz)

    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    165 x 3
    195 x 3
    215 x 3
    235 x 3
    235 x 3
    235 x 3

    DB Lunge

    40's x 10
    30 's x 10 (hip adductor? felt strained)

Box Squat (16". Should that be more like 12"?)

    135 x 3
    165 x 3
    175 x 3
    185 x 3

    Clean

    95 x 1
    135 x 1
    145 x 1
    155 x 1
    165 x 1
    175 x 1
    185 x 1
    195 x 1
    205 x miss

I love these new shoes. It took me a few sets to get decent form but by my second set of 235 I was busting out some pretty legit form and very stable reps. Smooth from start to finish, ass to grass..lol

My legs were jelly by the time cleans came along but those magic shoes kicked right in. I went in 10lb increments to get plenty of reps, and they were the best I've ever done. Everything was smooth and stable and when I hit bottom I was able to lock in and hold form coming back up. 225+ is on the horizon. Pretty exciting for me.

Being full-time working out at home now, I'll need some goals. Gotta get to work on that. My wife is interested in joining me for workouts so I think it's a good time to get a structured diet going. We're pretty co-dependent when it comes to food so we do well when we're on the same page.

Rule 1. Don't be stupid. Rule 2. Have a plan.

Good to see you moving in more of the direction that you're wanting. I'm a big fan of the structure we use for our split. Has been very effective for all of us.

Thanks Coke. Your comments are always appreciated.

Andrew..I'm trying really hard to not be stupid..lol. And, I actually have a plan. For once..

Started a new diet today. I got it from bb.com. It's a basic cutting diet but there was some really good, *easy to digest* information that helped me formulate things. I've got my meals laid out down to the macro. It's about 2400 calories, 40/40/20 P/C/F. My wife is doing her own thing diet-wise and expressed interest in working out with me. Last time we tried that I either overestimated her fitness level or underestimated my own, and she was so miserable for a week it completely turned her off from workouts with good ole Patz..lol

I think she's interested again because now that I quit the gym I'll be working out at home enough that she can jump on board. I planned out our first two weeks. It includes instructions on the major lifts and accessory stuff, then a traditional split with short met-con stuff every other workout. I've taken great pains this time around to see that she gets up to speed slowly. She's good at pushing herself so I gotta be careful. I really want this to stick. I've been excited all week that we might make this a regular thing. She can only get workouts in when the kids are with their dad so it'll be 3 on/5 off, then 4 on/2 off. I'll be doing additional days on my own during the longer break.

Tonight was workout 1. Just an intro mostly. I was pleasantly surprised to find her wrapping up 45 minutes of Just Dance on the Wii when I got home. Girl is serious..lol

    Back Squat coaching

    1 set of 5 with 45lb bar, 2 with 55lbs, 1 set of Front Squat @ 155.

Her technique/form is almost effortless so I showed her Front Squat as well. She picked it up easy. Strong too. She had no trouble with the weight. I was tempted to go heavier but we'll save that..lol

I did Front sets with 95/135/165/195 between her sets.

Moved-on to Deadlift. Also came natural to her. No sets though, as she was getting fatigued in the legs and we still had the met-con.

    Met-con

    8 minutes of..

    5 push-up, 10 squat, 15 sit-ups

She got 5 rounds. I got almost 9. She did great and was wiped out for a half hour afterward..lol. I should have gotten 12. It's very obvious I've missed a lot of met-cons lately..lol

Ok..that's all. Tomorrow is a more traditional upper body day.

*******Funny story..my coworker friend is a competitive bodybuilder. Eats 8k cals a day, 2 dozen eggs, 5lbs chicken, etc. he's known for a disgusting "shake" he makes using a plain chicken breast and water in a ninja blender..lol. So today he's making rice and I say "how many grains of rice do you think you've eaten since you started competing?" He said he eats 300 grams a day. I converted it to GRAINS and came up with a 2 year total of 7.3 MILLION grains of rice this guy has ingested. Unbelievable.

    Thanks buddy.

    Workout 2

Taught her to bench, close grip bench, dips, and seated overhead press (low ceilings).

    Bench

    45 x 8
    45 x 8

    115 x 5
    135 x 5
    155 x 5
    165 x 5
    175 x 5

    105 x 5
    115 x 5
    125 x 2
    135 x miss, miss..lol

She's really, really sore from yesterday. I guess it wouldn't have mattered how easy I took it on her--it's just a shock to the system. She's tough though, and really impressing me with her strength. Aside from grimacing from soreness she had no trouble with the bench, cgbp or overhead press. I've seen new girls at the gym fighting to get just one OHP with the 35lb bar.

Hopefully once we get her initial soreness behind us and get some baselines on her lifts we'll be able to get more sets in and get a consistent rep scheme. As it stands I'm just trying to gauge it off the amount of pain on her face..lol

Found a 50lb kettle bell on Amazon last night for $38, and a 1.75" resistance band for 24. Both free shipping. Score..

    145 x 5
    155 x 5
    165 x 5

I had to cut my hair first thing so I was short on time. I need to come up with more back movements too. I'm trying to think of a good poor man's GHD using my rack and something like a stability ball.

Joined a diet contest at my wife's school. Prize money is close to $500. I weighed in at 218.6. I'm up 7-8lbs. Some of it is quality weight though, but..I feel jiggly. It ends in March, so I think I could realistically lose 20lbs. I think I'd look pretty good. The diet is going well so far. I'm down 4lbs of something..lol

Decided to take up bow shooting and eventually hunting. Took my first shots last night and had a blast. Looking forward to getting better.

After dinner..not the best plan but our new ab-mat and kettle bell came in.

    50 sit-ups
    75 KB Swings
    100 burpees

Took 17:21. I've lost some conditioning. Not surprising really. No biggie.

Diet is still spot-on. Feelin' in the zone.

Thanks guys. Terry that's a lot of "free" protein! Free, after I spend a fortune on gear and camo. I hate camo..lol

Started a leg session yesterday but I've had some sinus pressure and my head started pounding. Tried again today.

    Squat

    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    165 x 2
    185 x 3
    205 x 3
    225 x 3
    245 x 3
    255 x 1
    270 x 1 (PR)

PR was a piece of cake, even in a calorie deficit. I had more but needed to get moving. I'm not real PR greedy these days anyway..lol. Another 5lbs puts me at an all-time PR.

    Box Squat

    185 x 3
    195 x 3
    195 x 3

    Would have liked more sets.

    DB Lunge

    30's x 10 x 10 x 10

Weighted Sit-ups x 10, 3 Sets (mostly experimenting with the new AbMat)
    Hanging Leg Raise x 10

Good session for the most part. Started out sketchy from diet-induced low energy but finished up strong. Still need to get started a little earlier but I try not to get going before the wife and kids leave.

Diet is spot-on. Haven't been this motivated in quite some time. Prize money for the contest is at $600. That's actually enough to motivate me now. I wanna win then spend it on a cruise and gain all the weight back in one week.

Thanks guys. Just gotta keep on progressin'..

    Workout with the wife..

    Taught her the Power Clean

Wife, PC x 30 bar reps over several sets, practice, etc. She did really well..probably because she's sleeping with the coach.

    Me (full Clean)

    135 x 3
    145 x 3
    155 x 2
    165 x 1
    175 x 1
    185 x 1
    195 x 1
    205 x miss x miss x 1

Couldn't seem to get my left arm in place until rep 3 of 205. Just felt weird.

    Met-con (w/wife)

    21-15-9

KB Swing (50lb me 10 her)
    Sit-up
    Squat

    Me-4:06, her-5:14

Short and sweet. She continues to really impress me with her toughness.
