The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Not quite as much as before though, but these journals are quite electric all their own.

Liking the am/pm session, did one of those myself this very day, lol.

Thanks fellas. Tryin to stay consistent and get lean. The diet is still going well. Moving a little slow so I'm cutting my calories to 2000 and gonna add some running in. Anxiety is giving me trouble too so I've gotta get some more longer duration cardio. It really helps and since leaving Crossfit my built up energy dispersement has suffered. On that note..

    Ran 2.5 miles Sunday..and sprained my foot/ankle.

Limped my way through a shoulders/abs session this morning.

    Rear Lateral Raise

    10 x 8
    15 x 8
    15 x 8

    Lateral Raise

    15 x 8
    15 x 8
    15 x 8

    Arnold Press

    30's x 6
    35 x 6
    40 x 6

    BB Press

    65 x 3
    95 x 3
    115 x 3
    115 x 5

    Abs

Did Hollow holds, sit-ups, med ball (30lb) oblique twists and plank.

Average workout. Was pleasantly surprised to get 5 reps of 115 press at the end of the workout. Strength there is moving along nicely. Might go for 150 soon. Lateral and RL raises are getting easier now. I'll bump those up to 20's next time.

My foot is killing me. Gonna put a hamper on my leg workouts if it doesn't shape up!

Too bad about the foot/ankle ordeal, just take a break off it or in general and you'll be good.

The foot still hurts but I'm at least walking now. Hopefully I'll be back to the "devil's work" in a few days. Headed out of town for the weekend for some HEAVY METAL and maybe an off broadway show. I have to repay my wife for accompanying me to Meshuggah and Intronaut..lol

She's unhappy with all the soreness and worried about injuring herself and I don't blame her. She's only eating 1,400 calories a day and this stuff is all brand new for her. Plus I've noticed that she's starting to warm up to the met-cons so I'm gonna change some things for our workouts together and still do my own thing. Gonna do more met-cons with her but try to keep things weighted and set the workouts up as upper, lower, etc to minimize soreness.

    Today

TABATA - 1 minute rest between movements

    KB Swings (50lb, 10lb)
    Burpees
    Sit-ups
    High Pulls (50lb, 20lb)

    Score. Me =286 Her =237

Thanks homey. We're going to Cheesecake Factory too. Bad things will likely occur.

workout (9 hours after the last one..lol)

    Squat

    Warmup then

    185 x 5
    205 x 5
    225 x 5

Some fatigue in the legs and especially the glutes from last night's efforts so I didn't have a full tank. Reps were solid though.

    Good Morning

    135 x 10
    135 x 10
    135 x 10

    Box Squat

    155 x 8
    175 x 8
    175 x 8

Man I REALLY felt these. Nice wide stance. I could really feel the glutes activate and take all of the load. (That sounded bad..rofl)

    SLDL

    Warmup then

    185 x 8
    185 x 8
    185 x 8

Great workout. Rest intervals were very short in order to get all my sets in. I've got all this week's workouts written including the warmups. I'm learning little bits about how to coach and I've found that she's much more comfortable and independent if I have everything planned ahead.

Have you ever thought about training crossfit but with a strength bias?

Westside but with 2 short metcons(8mins give or take) thrown in and some sled work? Rotating Press, Push press, Push jerk, bench press and their variations. Then for lower rotating in Squat, clean, snatch and deadlift and their variations or just keep the oly movments for the metcons or rotate them in less or keep them for assistance if you want a powerlifting bias.

Man you're doing some good things in here. Glad to see you found your right choice and ended up dumping CrossFit. Nothing against it myself but it's always nice to see people figuring out what they really want.

Are you making sure to stretch the F U K C out of your wife after each workout? And on off days. Stretching is literally one of the most imporant things for general health, let alone someone who is ripping apart their muscles and rebuilding them every day. Check out this link for some ridiculous stretches. I do some of them. http://www.musclechemistry.com/uploa...-included.html

Glad to see things are going well for ya. Keep your wife motivated by introducing Wolff's Law and the General Adaptation Syndrome to her... Yes, she is sore as fcuk right now. But her body will adapt very soon, it's proven. Showing her Wolff's law will keep her motivated to keep at it so her bones stay healthy.

Also, have you read Practical Programming? I'm about 60 pages in and have learned so much. Best $15 I've spent in a while.

I would love to do that stuff, but my workout schedule doesn't allow me to do so. 2-3 workouts a week are with my wife and Westside (or anything weight dominant) isn't her cup of tea. And I'll gladly sacrifice a bit to keep her interested in working out in-general. She likes the met-cons, so my plan is to keep that up with her and sneak in weighted stuff and even start increasing it for her as I see progress. I also don't have the ceiling height for a lot of that stuff. I was doing a good bit of that when I worked out at a Crossfit box and it was my favorite stuff. There's a box called Crossfit Strength. The WODs on their page were right up my alley.

I've been itching to do something more like what Alex put in his article about strength and endurance. I could probably work that into my schedule if I can find a consistent place to run.

Man I enjoyed the hell out of Crossfit for almost 3 years but I finally started losing interest. I think it was a combination of my developing preferences for some things and distaste for others (which totally contradicts the Crossfit mantra) which then turned into me just not caring about doing some of the things Crossfit entails (like muscle-ups or handstand push-ups), which lead to me not working on those things anymore, which led to me thinking about strength more. But, it's also just gotten too popular. That feeling of exclusivity is gone and with the increase in interest by the public (which I think is great for the gym and I'm happy for them), it's just become something I don't feel a need to be a part of anymore. Maybe one day I'll change my mind. As for now, I'm dumping that $125/month into a crapload of equipment. I've got a pretty stout home gym and growing..lol

I'll look into the stuff you provided. I like the idea of training for programming skills.

As for the stretching, I don't have her doing enough of it. She's usually miserable and laying on the floor afterward. She uses my rumble roller and lacrosse ball some. I'll have to mandate some extra stretching.

Went out of town and missed a few workouts. Foot is FINALLY feeling good. Even as recently as this past weekend I couldn't walk comfortably for more than 20 minutes or so. Also still getting some bad anxiety, which is why I sprained the foot..lol. Drives me nuts. I should know better because it always starts to kick in when haven't been doing enough met-cons. Takes a few weeks of workouts and getting off the coffee to get rid of it. That's what happens to ADD Epileptics..lol

Worked out Sunday. It was a met-con with some Tabata I think.

    Tuesday evening..

    15min AMRAP

    20 KB swings (50lb)
    20 Mountain Climbers
    10 Goblet Squats (50lb)
    10 Push-ups
    5 Deadlift (135lb) into
    5 Power Clean into
    5 Front Squat

Got through it all 3 times and up to 3 of the Push-ups. Tough workout!

    Wednesday

    100 Ball Slams (20lb)
    100 sit-ups
    50 ball slams

    14:58

    Today (quick one)

    DB bench - 55 x 8 x3
    Bench Press - 135 x 3, 155 x 5, 165 x 5
    CGBP - 135 x 8 x3

Nothing special. Just wanted to get some reps in. Max effort workouts are proven to cause anxiety in some people so I'm gonna scale it back a bit until my anxiety is under control. Did I mention it drives me nuts??

If my foot is good to go I'm gonna start throwing some running back in. It's the best cure for anxiety I've found.

Cold water showers are known to reduce anxiety considerably, just a thought - may want to give it a try. Experiment with extreme hot/cold intervals too and see if it helps at all. Wish you well with that Patz.

Workout 3/3/13 - Short on time, as usual.

Arnold Press (super sets with Lateral and Rear Lateral raise)

    20's x 6
    30 x 6
    35 x 6
    40 x 6

    Lateral Raise

    15 x 10
    15 x 10
    15 x 10
    15 x 10

    Rear Lateral Raise

    15 x 10
    15 x 10
    15 x 10
    15 x 10

    Barbell Press

    95 x 5
    105 x 5

I hate the lateral raises. They're dumb and I don't want to do them anymore. I need to find something else that doesn't involve pink dumbbells.

    Workout - today

    Squat

    95 x 3
    115 x 3
    145 x 3
    175 x 5
    195 x 5
    215 x 5
    225 x 1
    245 x 1

Felt pretty good. With the foot sprain I haven't moved anything "heavy" in almost 3 weeks. Form was nice and slow and smooth and upright.

DB Lunge (I swear these were invented as torture)

    40's x 10
    40 x 10
    40 x 10

    GM's

    135 x 8
    135 x 8
    135 x 8

I might get rid of these. They feel really uncomfortable for the little bit of work I feel them doing. I'll probably switch to SLDL. I've also got a plan for a homemade add-on to my rack that will be a GHD.

    Box Squat

    155 x 8
    175 x 8

Ran out of time. I really like the box squats and I feel like I'm coming out of the hole much better already on my back squat. Definitely gonna keep these around.

    Workout

    Bench Press

    45 x 15
    95 x 8
    115 x 3
    135 x 3
    155 x 3
    165 x 3
    175 x 3
    185 x 3

    Dips

    BW x 5
    BW x 5
    BW x 5
    BW x 5

    25 Ball slams (20lb)
    50 Burpees
    75 Sit-ups

About 10 minutes on that one. My legs are shot from yesterday so trying to get a little active recovery in to feel decent for Cleans tomorrow. Haven't done those in a couple weeks so I'm itchin' to get back on 'em.

Got two weeks left on my wife's school diet contest. I'm down about 8lbs and I've been at the low weight 4 days in a row, so I think I'll hit 207 maybe tomorrow. I think the last 3-4 days before the weigh-in we'll go strict low carb with daily cardio and see if we can each knock out 3-4lbs of water. If she can do that she might win. She's lost a couple more ounds than I have but weighs a lot less, so the percentages will be in her favor.

Thanks buddy. Just tryin' to break a sweat up in here.

    CLEANS

    95 x 3
    135 x 3
    145 x 3
    155 x 3
    165 x 3
    175 x 1
    185 x 1
    195 x 1
    205 x 1
215 x miss, miss, miss and fell off platform.

Happy to have gotten 205 since I haven't done many cleans lately. 215 is my PR. I almost got it on the third rep. I was running out of time so my rest intervals weren't what they needed to be. No big deal. Just wanted to get some solid work in and I did that.

Session #2 this evening. Met-con with the wife.
