The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Interesting about the Orlando water, my cousins lives down there and brags about it quite a bit - so can't wait to throw their water ordeal at her, lol.

Nice seeing you resume things after the vacation.

If you're still up in the air, I'd recommend giving 5/3/1 a go. I've been very happy with the work I've been able to put in following it.

Terry that water is GROSS. It has something to do with the water table. Orlando is pretty cool but I like my minimal traffic and courteous drivers in WV/KY..LOL

Andy, how much volume is there? I started the big but boring of 5/3/1 once when equipment was limited. It was pretty short and boring. I do need something I can fit into an hour though since school starts in a month.

    Monday

    Power Clean

    135 x 5
    145 x 5
    155 x 4

    Bench

    135 x 5
    140 x 5
    145 x 5

    Squat

    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    175 x 5

    Tuesday

2 hours of basketball. Played pretty well by m standards.

    Yesterday

Wife did elliptical and 4 rounds of metcon stuff. I was due for a light 5 x 5 with power cleans, squats and press. In the interest of time since it was 7pm and we hadn't had dinner I did

    5 x 5 Full Clean @ 115
    5 x 5 DB press up to 45lbs

We're gonna do something today. Not sure what since it's raining. Tomorrow is another 5 x 5, medium day.

The volume has been pretty good for me, although I'm shoving 4 days of work into 3.

Yesterday..Medium day. My back started to get really tight and we were going to a party so I passed up on the squats and took Aleve. It spasm'd off and on up to and including bedtime. Is always the lower left side that seems to be feeling the strain on workout days. I try to stretch, mobilize and do facial release most days. Sucks.

I haven't spent my equipment budget in 3 months and realized the other day that I have almost enough to buy a high quality GHD. The one at my old gym did a lot of good for me so I'm gonna pull the trigger and get one from Again Faster I think. It'll be the same model the gym had.

    Power Clean

    125 x 5
    130 x 5
    135 x 5
    140 x 5
    145 x 5

    Press

    75 x 5
    85 x 5
    95 x 5
    100 x 5
    105 x 5
95 x 6 (was supposed to be 10 reps or max out up to 10)

Actually was a decent workout. It was in the evening and I was pretty loose up to that point. I had been on my feet all day, and even worked in my little garden for a while. It's my first try at gardening. I even got my first ripe tomato as a matter of fact, and it was pretty tasty.

Gonna do something today. Metcon or cardio.

Here's my last set of Power Cleans. Any thoughts on form? Seems to me I'm not shrugging much.

Crossfit forum says I'm coming out of the deadlift too soon, my feet are retreating and my back isn't flat enough. I can't do much about the back though.

Interesting about the garden dude, haven't done that in years but found it therapeutic especially when I was a kid with my folks, and we had everything, you name it.

Not looking bad in the vid, any technical quirks you have along the way gets squared with time and effort.

I was always taught to over emphasize the pull of the power clean. I would practice high pulls to further cement that recruitment pattern you need. When you get into higher loads, you will need to use that high pull to get your elbows under the bar. Are you initiating the clean at mid thigh or hip crease?

I like it Coke. I don't actually have to do much maintenance so far other than weeding and adding more trellice. I'm looking forward to the veggies though.

Rob I guess it's mid thigh. High pulls would probably help. It was also recommended that I work from the hang too.

Man the journal section is dead lately. I barely fall off page 1 over the course of a couple days. I can remember a few years ago I could fall to page 3 in less than a day.

My sentiments exactly Patz, the worst I've ever seen it...even I fell off a bit this spring/summer, lol.

+1 to that. I remember being able to post 2 workouts a page. I think on the whole, this forum is a little inactive as of late.

Pat, here's what I see with the video. Take all this with a grain of salt as I'm not an Oly guy, though we have several that train out of our affiliate.

    1. Work on a lower starting position (hamstring, hip and groin flexibility)
    2. Work on scooping your hips into and under the bar.
    3. Work on a more aggressive shrug. As you mentioned, you don't appear to attack the shrug very much.
    4. Work on pulling yourself under the bar. You're pulling back to the point where you're physically moving backwards away from the bar. As that bar beginning to float between navel and sternum, actively work on pulling yourself down and under the bar.

    Solo mis dos centavos.

Fuck, fight, or hold the light.

Yeah back when I was a mod this place was a blast. General chat was awesome, the pic/video section was great, etc, and there were tons of people asking how to work the upper chest or look like Brad Pitt in Troy. It was great.

With the lull in regular workouts lately and complete lack of cardio, my anxiety has come back. It's mainly at bedtime and really jacking up my sleep. I thought about it a lot and decided that cardio has to be a regular thing for me. That and removing caffiene usually keeps it at bay so I have to make it a priority. I thought about it and about how bad I am at sticking to routines and procrastinating that the best solition for me is to have two full hours to workout so I can get in weights and cardio. so far so good..

    Yesterday

Squat (a ton of focus on neutral spine and stable trunk. This felt REALLY stable, and no back pain on the lower left side like usual)

    135 x 3
    165 x 3
    185 x 3
    205 x 3
    215 x 2

    Bench

    115 x 5
    135 x 5
    145 x 5
    145 x 5
    145 x 5

    2000m Run

    Today

Power Clean (lots of form focus)

    115 x 3
    135 x 3
    145 x 3
    155 x 3
    165 x 3
    175 x 3

Seated Press (focus on external shoulder rotation)

    85 x 3
    95 x 3
    100 x 3
    105 x 3
    110 x 3

500m run. Foot started hurting so I shut it down. It was very minor but the last time I kept going I was jacked up for 2 months

This morning..A rare saturday workout on a work day. Had to be at work at 8:00 so I got started at 6:40.

    3 Rounds

    40 Double Unders
    30 Ball Slams
    500m Run

Man I've really lost the mediocre conditioning I had back in January. I didn't even feel warmed up until my third run. My double unders were horrible. I don't think I strung together more than 20 at any time.

I missed this post before. Thanks! Those suggestions make sense. I'm working on rebuilding my form from the ground up already. I'll save your suggestions and work them in.

Don't you have people at your CF box to eye this, too? what are they saying?

Yeah back when I was a mod this place was a blast. General chat was awesome, the pic/video section was great, etc, and there were tons of people asking how to work the upper chest or look like Brad Pitt in Troy. It was great.
I remember when this place was co-owned with Daniel, there was a lot more promotion on the forum front. Contests, give-a-ways, video challenges, etc. More of a community. Now, it's just the same guys who stick around and comment on a group of people's journals or threads. Not to mention, "Wannabe Big" is kind of a turn off name for a forum.

I took a hiatus from the CF gym at the first of the year. It's all on my own these days. It's hard to believe it's been 6 months already. I've been spending my $125/month on equipment since then. I've got bumper plates, metcon stuff, bands, etc. and sometime in the next few weeks I'm ordering a GHD. I can't wait. The one at the gym did so much good for my low back and hip tension.

There was a name change planned for the site at one point but I guess it never materialized. It does kinda sound like a product for kids..lol

And I swear, I think a big killer was when they stopped allowing posts in general chat to count toward a member's overall post count. I saw no point in that. Who cares if people pad their stats? Gen chat died after that and the other forums followed. I joined NINE years ago and it was a lot of fun right up to when I gave up my modship.

I swear.. After nine years here I should be a beast..lol

    Lol..we'll see.

    Squat

    95 x 3
    115 x 3
    135 x 3
    165 x 3
    185 x 3
    205 x 3
    225 x 3
    235 x 3

    Bench

    95 x 5
    115 x 5
    135 x 5
    145 x 5
    150 x 5

    Dips

    Bw x 3
    Bw x 3

    2000m Run

My dip strength is shot..lol. Squats felt good. Kept K Starr's book handy and tried hard to really get tight and squat correctly. Two weeks in a row now where my lower left side didn't hurt afterward, and I feel much more stable. I also followed his instructions for bench and felt much more stable. Now I just gotta get my cleans under control.

It's definitely high but to some people it's worth it. I wasn't as into the additional classes or social side of it but I guess someone could look at it like a club with dues. The price was never a big deal for me. i just sort-of lost interest. It changed. We were a small affiliate for a long time then it just exploded and tripled size in less than a year. That's GREAT for them and it's nice to see, but what attracted me was the exclusivity of it and that's disappearing quickly.

I will say it's lot of fun buying all this gear..lol. I'm gonna have a kickass gym pretty soon.

    Today

    Power Clean
    75 x 3
    95 x 3
    115 x 3
    135 x 3
    145 x 3
    155 x 3
    165 x 3
    175 x 3
    175 x 3

I did these really slow and focused. took my time. Form was a lot better but I really need to focus on the slow pull. My feet stayed put though and I didn't bounce the bar off my thighs as much.

    Seated Press

    75 x 5
    95 x 5
    100 x 5
    105 x 5
    110 x 4

Again, had the book near me and really focused on form. Keeping the elbows in really helps.

    Outside..

Tabata Ball Slams and Double Unders
