    A riddle

    I'm sure many of you have heard it before but I just can't figure it out.

    So anyways...

    3 guys go to a hotel that costs $25 (its a special) but the cashier rings it up as $30. So each guy pays 10 bucks. Then the manager says "you idiot we're only charging $25 a room tonight". So the cashier takes 5 one dollar bills thinking about how to split it up between the 3 men. So he gives each man back $1 and keeps $2 for the tip.

    The riddle is if each man payed 10 and got a dollar back they each spent $9 correct? Where did the extra dollar go?

    $25 for the room + $2 tip = $27 = 3x$9 or 3x($10-$1).

    $30 (up front) - $3 (returned to the men) = $27 (total price)

    $27 (total price) - $2 (tip) = $25 (for the room)

    The riddle is "confusing" because you're probably trying to count forward and backwards at the same time. If you do that, it won't come out right.

    First, when you have the you have the 30 dollars you're subtracting the three dollars. But for some reason people want to magically think that they're supposed to add 2 dollars once they subtract the three. So, you've never actually subtracted the five dollars. Instead, you've only subtracted one becuase you subtracted three and then added two.

    But, if you just take it that every man pays 10 dollars. And then is given back one dollar each taht leaves them at 27 dollars total in payment. Then you have to SUBTRACT the 2 additional dollars that the owner keeps.

    so wait, who keeps the extra dollar?

    man1 = $9
    man2 = $9
    man3 = $9
    Tip= $2

    Thats the hard part is that you add them all up and they = 29

    you can't add, you must subtract.

    The $9 they each paid includes the tip. The hotel room itself only cost them $8.33 each. The other $0.67 is the tip.

    There is no extra dollar.

    The men initially pay $30. $3 is returned to them, meaning they paid a total of $27 for room and tip. The room cost $25 and the tip cost $2, for a total of $27 dollars. Each of the three ment paid $9 in total which totals $27.

    In other words, the $5 extra that was paid is broken down into $3 returned to the men and $2 tip. The $2 tip, not the $3 returned to the men, is added to the cost of the $25 room, for a total of $27 dollars.

    oooooooooh I understand now. But when you add it all up it still makes no sense.

    how come when you add them up they only equal 29 though?

    9+9+9+2=29

    25+2+3=30

    I still don't get how if you add it up the first way there is a dollar missing. Because they each pay $9, there's no getting around that. 3x9=27. Then they gave them a 2 dollar tip, that equals up to $29, no more money was spent.

    9+9+9+3=30

    You need to add the $3 that is returned to the men. The $2 is already included in the sum that the men pay with their respective $9 contributions.

    So then how much did each man pay? $9? 3x9 still equals 27, when adding the tip it comes out to 29 dollars.

    I don't understand how this riddle can confuse anyone, or how it's even a "riddle".

    Men pay 30 dollars, which is 5 dollars too much.

    The guy at the desk gives them back 1 dollar each and keeps 2 dollars for himself.

    Therefore, the 5 dollars was broken up between the men (1 dollar each) and the clerk kept the other 2. What is there not to understand? There is no "extra" dollar.

    Sorry I deserve a stupid slap. I would understand it, then I would keep thinking "what about blah blah" and I would keep confusing myself.
