The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Lower back pain: Suggestions for remedy?

    History:

    Been working out for 18 years. Am 5' 7" @ 185lbs ~ 13%bf. Workout 5 days a week using the following schedule:

    M - Chest/Back
    T - Arms
    W - Legs
    T - Cardio/Shoulders
    F - Arms

For the past 6 months or so, I go to the chiropractor to get my back adjusted and I normally only have "slight" pain on a daily basis. I do deadlifts, bent over rows and pullups as part of my back routine and go very heavy usually about every 4th time when it comes time to do back. I also vary the exercises i do as well from week to week.

    I do abs 4 days per week (2 on 1 off - 2 on 2 off)

This past weekend, I woke up with my lower back "locked up" and it more pain than usual--problem is i didn't do anything to cause this. Now it could be my mattress--it is 8 years old. But what I am wondering if my back is actually weak on not. I was trying to think of some exercises that would strengthen my lower back and I came up with (other than deadlifts) these:

    and good mornings.

Could anyone offer some suggestions? Thanks.

I have been discussing it. He suggested i stretch my hammies more--which I have been and it has helped but this pain comes from out of the blue!! I didn't do anything to cause it.

it could be spondylolysis or spondylolysthesis -- either a fracture of one of the verterbraes or a slippage of one of the discs (usually at L4, L5). I would consult with an ortho MD.

It seems really random, and if you don't think that it's related to bbing, then try sleeping somewhere else for a while if you can and see if you feel better. I know of lots of people, including my mom whom have had unknown back problems that have been fixed with just changing the mattress. She would wake up with back pain that would subside during the day, but flare up in the morning.
Goal: Set a deadlift provincial record in mens junior.

you need xrays to make that diagnosis

Do you do static stretching for your back?

I had similar pain off and on for a year. I quit lifting for 6 weeks but there was no change so I went back to lifting. Then I quit doing any type of stretching for my lower back and the pain slowly cleared up in a month or two. I think every time I stretched I was aggravating something even though it didn't hurt while stretching.
