The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    "health freak..." *rolls eyes*

so this is just me venting and thinking outloud

first off, i am a freshman in college. I personally don't know much about weight lifting, but from books and these forums i know enough to hold my own. today, at lunch, i was eating with my roommate and his girlfriend. She saw my plate and was like "wow..health freak".

i knew she was kidding but still..kinda struck me by suprise. all i had on there was a sandwhich with ALOT of turkey and a salad with a couple glasses of water. i look at there plates and what did they have?? couple slices of pizza, glass of choc milk and pop. ice cream, french fries, and gobs of ranch, mayo, and ketchup for the fries. since school started in august, hes gained almost twenty pounds, she has gained ten. i've lost five.... i just laughed to myself..

to add more to the story...

being the nice guy i am i offered to let my roommate workout with me this morning. well for me its leg, back, and bi day and i told him that. hes like ok whatever. first off was back squats ... he tells me that he has never squatted before! hard to believe since he was a football player all highschool and also ran track. after that we were doing chin ups/assisted chin ups. since he couldnt do that many he just watched me. next was cleans...not a chance he could do those. i would of helped but all i got was " you do so many weird f***** up lifts! *laughs awkwardly*" .. next he says " ha yeah you deadlift your 315 and ill just do my chest, triceps, and biceps.."

I couldn't believe it. i just wanted to rip into him and tell him how ridiculous what he just said was but i didnt want to lose my spotter just yet...

ever since i started cutting they are always talkin crap and stuff about how im so weird for eating like i do. everytime they get ice cream or slushy's from the cafeteria i make me a protein shake. they always got all this talk about oh i just did 15 sit ups so i can eat the half package of oreos i have from last night.....ugh......seriously.....

anyway, sorry for the long *** story but ignorant, oblivious people really **** me off!!
    Starting over...

You get out what you put in.

If people are still clueless and not willing to listen after you approach them and offer to help, forget about them. It's getting to the point where it's annoying how many people on campus come up to me and say "hey are you working out today? Yeah? Cool can I come with you?" I have no problem offering advice, but when someone asks me for help the first thing I tell them is start researching basic routines and nutrition tips. Of course, they say "yeah sure thing, no problem" then it a day or two passes and they want to come work out with me, and they don't have a clue about anything because they really didn't research anything. It's especially annoying because I like working out by myself, and if I'm not by myself, one other person max.

When I started lifting, I didn't have anyone else guide me through the gym. I did a lot of reading, and a lot of trial and error in the gym. Learning what exercises/routines worked best for me. It's annoying when all these people make no effort to get on their feet on their own, and just beg me to hold their hand through every workout like I'm their own personal trainer.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, don't try to help people that don't want to me helped. Find the ones that are gonna listen to you when you tell them to do some research on their own.

My friends and roommates have seen my transformation from 175 pounds skinny fat kid at 5'7-8 to a 175, leaner, taller, stronger, 175 at 5'11. I know my weight has stayed the same but in between a lopt has happened... Went from 175 to 145 skinny fat and than in a school year I went to 192 and than cut down to 170. Ive had to do a complete body transformation. They also think my lifts are messed up, but they also think they are hardcore and of course joke around about it but they tell me that im the strongest person they know (which is quite sad) and when anyone they know talks about weightlifting they bring me up.

It took time, but my roommates came around when they saw the results. Everyone I know said they would have never thought in a million years that I would turn out the way I did, give it time.

Get used to it, bro. I've been living with the same roommate for over 4 years and he still doesn't get it - he probably never will.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that you weigh 137lbs. I think you're skinny and I'm certainly not fat, nor am I jealous of the fact that you have an eight pack at 137lbs.

Anyone can starve themselves, it has nothing to do with genetics.

Because many people who go to the gym and bodybuild and weight train do it because they feel insecure because they didn't look good (or as good as people think they should look) and therefore are always worrying about what people think of them.

well its not that i care...but after a 5 -6 months of the same , obnoxious comments it kind of builds up . i was just venting..thinking out loud.

i cared initially because he "showed" interest and i felt bad because he had gained a bunch of weight in like 3 weeks

People can look however they want...I don't really care...that's their decision and is their right. However...gloating over having an 8-pack when you're skinny is really silly. When you're that skinny, it isn't hard to have your abs showing. That means nothing. It just means you're really skinny. I know a lot of guys that have crazy abs...they also look like starved Ethiopian children with their ribs poking out of their sides like a ravaged corpse eaten by vultures. Abs and nothing else really don't mean much.

    5"10 - 137lbs @ 6.5-7%BF
Oh and yes...this is really freaking skinny. They call you skinny because you're...well...skinny...not because you have an 8-pack. You can look however you want, that's perfectly fine...but your 8-pack is not a result of your genetics. You are borderline underweight for your height.

Also, people are *******s and you shouldn't care what they think. Just do what you want and what makes you feel good. That's what lifting is all about anyway...it's a very personal thing.
