The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Decided to give up my arm work out. If I stay focused I can get out in about an hour for every workout I have, except for arms. That takes about 2 so to save time, and perhaps see new gains I am giving up arm day, and going to do cardio instead.

    225x5 ATG
    315x5 ATG
    315x5 ATG
    315x5 ATG

All felt really good. The last 3 sets weren't ridiculously difficult but they did require some effort. I probably couldve gone to 365 or more and felt like I was gunna puke after each set but this is my first week back so I am easing into it and so far I am impressed with my strength considering I was off for 3 weeks. Everything is abbreviated because I don't feel I have enough time to spend 1.5-2 hours plus clean up in the gym with school going on.

Good day yesterday. Funny **** happened too. Guy in the squat rack at my school was chalking up and using wrist straps to do 495 shoulder shrugs. Of course they weren't really shrugs so much as he was just bouncing the bar up and down using the momentum to knock out reps. Well anyhow, his form sucked and his shoulders are small too. I lol'd. Then I proceeded to squat 405x3 ATG.

    Squat
    135x10 ATG
    225x5 ATG
    315x5 ATG
405x2.75 ATG (on the 3rd rep I went as deep as I could without folding inside out, and I was pushing back up got halfway up stalled, realized I was holding my breath for an awfully long time (head was turning purple), so I exhaled, and inhaled, my core was still tight but my legs just gave out.
    405x1 ATG
    365x2 ATG

Very cool experience after the 405 set. My whole body got a pump. While I was in the process of waiting to puke, my chest and my abs and my legs and my back all got pumped simultaneously and I felt m shirt getting tighter and my watermelons pop under my arms.
    Seated calf raises
    180x7
    270x5
    270x6

    SLDL
    315x5
    315x5
    315x5
    315x5
    315x5
These were all fairly quick in succession I kept it light bc I went all out on the squats, though I was feeling it by the 4th and 5th set.

    Pleasant day once more

    DL
    135x10
315x16 I wanted 20 but I pussed out on the last 4 reps
315x10 last 2 reps were brutal

    GM
    135x5
    185x5
    205x5
225x6 I did 6 for good luck, I felt like I couldve done 10 or more but I didn't want to wear myself out. looks like I forgot a set too...damnit I wouldve done 10 if I realized I was only on my 4th set...I attribute my 225 GM set to the 405 ATG squats I did last week.

    Upright Cable Row
    180x7
    180x7
    180x7
    180x7
    180x7

The whole time I lifted it felt like I was disconnected from reality, in a dream like state, I thank the 315x16 DLs for that.

Ok, I am starting cardio tomorrow...I see my doc in 2 weeks and I bet my blood pressure sucks relatively (130/80 versus 115/60 like it used to be). I'll keep it to 20 minutes a day, looking for 3 days a week. I would love to do some sprints, but I need to figure out those logistics, I don't really have anywhere to do them consistently. Soon soon...homework time...

Just went through my journal...wanted to see what my starting lifts were like. Here are my maxes are from November 2007:

    BP: 175x5
    Squat: 155x5
    DL: 265x5

    And Now:
    BP: 315x2 (can do 275x5x5)
Squat: 405x2 ATG (can do 365x5x5 ATG)
    DL: 425x1 (can do 405x5x5)

So over 2 years with 6 months off time due to money issues, therefore about 1.5 years of total training time I've added 140 lbs to my bench 250 lbs to my squat and 160 lbs to my deadlift. Of course this is an understatement considering my increased ROM in squat and huge improvements in form on all 3 etc etc...

    Yesterday's workout went like this:

    Squat
    135x10 ATG
    315x5 ATG
    365x5 below parallel
    365x4 below parallel
    365x3 below parallel
    315x5 1 ATG 4 below parallel

    Seated Calf Raises
    5 plates x 7
    5 plates x 7
    5 plates x 7

I was beat, probably needed to eat or something so I just did some leg extensions and called it a day

    Leg extension
    296.6x7
    296.6x7
    296.6x7
I was repping the whole stack I didn't bother looking down to see the number on that last weight on the stack I'm pretty sure it was 290.

Solid workouts in here, I like the set up of your routine simple and to the point. Keep up the good work.
Success is achieved by doing a little more than you thought you could, and a lot more than anyone else.

Good luck with leaning out, you ought to have pleasing results if you stay on point with the program all winter.

Thats what I hope I need to adjust my diet a little bit as of now I am taking in about 1000 calories & 120g protein between 7 am and 7pm since I'm on campus and primarily just drinking shakes and I don't really want to be stuffing my face with another 1000+ calories from 8 to 12 when I get home. I would actually prefer not to eat from 8pm til when I wake up the next day. Hell if I were judging someone who had the exact body composition and was moving identical weight I wouldn't even call them fat I just see Dave Tate's before and after pictures and thats what I want. I don't want to be a body builder I just am sick of the fat overhang around my waist when I put pants on. I am pretty low body fat on my legs and arms and back, its just the boobies and spare tire region that hold all my flab. I guess thats the way it is with most guys though.

    I was going for 315x20 I failed

    squat
    135x20
    315x10
    315x6
    315x8

done. I think I'll throw goodmornings and front squats in too. My core is going to be a cynlinder of power if I don't hit a DL after my arm heals up I'm breaking the neck of the first curl jockey I see. Also I think my form was a little off my lower back got really tight after my sets but I took one of those infamous VD contrast showers and it loosened me up on the first round.
    My journal
    Goal(Current):
    400(335) Bench Press
    600(520x3 2xBW) Dead Lift
    500(495x1) ATG Squat
    Total: 1500(1350)
    365 Front Squat
    consistency and intensity.

Strong squating. Sucks about your forearm hopefully that heals up real quick.

Im in the same boat as you as I am trying to drop body fat and improve my overall body composition. Good luck with it, its not east but give it 100% week in and week out and you will get there.
Success is achieved by doing a little more than you thought you could, and a lot more than anyone else.

So the pain in my forearm had subsided for almost 3 days, only to return when I got a pump from my wicked squats. I have done nothing strenuous (maybe) with my forearm beyond typing with my hand, I did rerack the weights using either my right arm only or doing my best to distribute the load evenly between my two arms. Anyhow I woke up today and the pain is no longer in the muscle area, its actually in the tendon now.

    Squat
    135x10 atg
    315x5 atg
    365x5 parallel
405x1 parallel (didn't think i'd get back up)
    365x2 parallel
    365x3 parallel

    Wrist curl left arm
    20x20

    Low intensity cardio 20 minutes.
