OK so I've been trying to think of the word that goes with the situation and can't. Say you have a perfect situation such as in a book, where the characters have found what they think is a perfect life, yet there is something wrong with it. This may be because of their past actions or something of that nature but their perfect life or situation is somewhat lessened in perfection because of this one thing. This is the example that made me think of the word. We are reading the book The Kite Runner. In the book Amir finds the right girl and settles down but he can't have children, and this might be as a punishment for not standing up for his friend when they were little. Is there a word to describe the bad thing that happens to them to put a damper on their perfect situation? or am I just going crazy? my english teacher didn't know but I didn't know if you guys had any idea. i wanna say like it's a "reserve" or something like that but I don't think thats right.
sry if I seem crazy, this has been driving me nuts.

Out of the night that covers me,Black as the Pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul. In The fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the horror of the shade And yet the menace of the years finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate how charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

could it be "reversal of fortune"?
Are you looking for the word for the one bad thing or the word for the situation where only one thing is wrong?
The closest thing I can think of is "bane," but you are probably looking for something more specific.
The definition of the word you are looking for would be something like: "the single ruiner of an otherwise perfect situation." Right?

The Iron never lies to you. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go, but 200 pounds is always 200 pounds - a warm-up.
He wants a word that means Catch-22/nirvana or flawed/paradise.
But you need to specify if it is a word that means a perfect place with a flaw, or a perfect place that is not perfect because of a person's actions in the past.
I do pullups and stuff.
paradoxical utopia for the first, karma for second. my guesses.
"Fine, if I'm not allowed to light it on fire, can my imaginary friend?"
I read that book and it wasnt that good ... just burn it .
Give me your broken , give me your beaten ... I will build them up , I will lead them ... to the threshhold . Make you stronger , make you believe .
I hate to rain on someone else's parade without offering up a constructive suggestion myself, but you can't actually say "paradoxical utopia". There's nothing remotely paradoxical about the word utopia.
Utopia = "no place", a wonderful magical land where everything is perfect and there are no worries/want/harm. No paradox there...
I think you're looking for something closer to purgatory. He's locked in a world of his own guilt and shame, can see the pearly gates but can't quite get there, etc. etc.
