The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Keep with it man. Look up some autopsy photos of tobacco users, and that should keep you scared away from it.

The most important thing to realize is that the longer you go without smoking the smaller and less intense the cravings will be. That being said. Once you succeed at quitting for awhile you don't ever want to flirt with smoking again as just one will cause the cravings to begin. Hang in there.

I think the problem is your mind.
Yes, I know you are freaking out. I know you are 'feeling' a lot of things. The withdrawal fits, occasional nausea, headaches, iritiability, etc, seem physical enough, but it's in your mind where you question yourself. It's in your mind where you entertain the notion of smoking again. Just stop it.

My fiancee was able to quit after smoking for 10 years by using the patch, gum and lozenges, all three, and weaning off of them slowly.

Hmm... Perhaps you should take the Uncle Buck method..

To quit smoking cigarettes, take up cigars, after a year quit cigars by taking up the pipe, after a year quit the pipe by taking up chewing tobacco, after a year quit the chewing tobacco by using the gum then after a year quit the gum by using the patch.

    It's the 5 year plan

I wonder how quitting smoking would compare to quitting oxycontin. When I was coming off the pills I was waking up in the middle of the night with a soaked bed, it sucked.

I'm pretty sure hardcore opiate addiction is worse than any other addiction there is. Physical withdrawal symptoms last up to six months or longer depending on how long and how much the person was using.

Well then thank god I wasn't into that stuffy heavy. I suppose it all comes down to dosage.

Either way anyone kicking a self-deprecating habit has my full support.

I didn't read anybody else's posts because they didn't seem serious (sorry to the ones that are) but I'm trying to stop smoking too. And I have stopped since new years. But what has helped me so far is black and milds. Don't smoke them all the time, but if you get a really bad urge just puff on one of those for a second. That way you can smoke something, and you don't have to buy a pack of cigs, which is usually how I fail.

I'm trying to quit or at least cut back. So far its been going pretty well for me but its only been like a week. I don't think I'll ever quite smoking completley until I'm married/have a family but I'd like to quit smoking on a daily basis and go back to "social" smoking like I used to. Like only smoking a pack or two a month versus every couple days.

Also, my suggestion is to quit slowly.....of all the permanent ex-smokers I talked to, they spent weeks quitting but they had a plan and they stuck with it. Theres no sense in rushing it just to hop back on in a few days. I think you should smoke one less cigarette a day (then your average) for a week and keep going that way. It'll look like this..

    Week 1- A pack
    Week 2- 19 cigs. a day
    Week 3- 18 cigs a day

And so on. Obviously if you don't smoke a whole pack it won't take you as long but I think its a good idea. It worked for my grandfather. Smoke free for 30 years.

There have been many threads like this - some recent. A search would be good.
A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

at approximately 7 days of no smoking, your body is actually over its nicotine addiction.

    unfortunately your brain is not.

when I quit, I kept a tin of Altoids with me. instead of the after dinner cigarette, I'd pop an altoid.

it helps with the oral fixation and helps transition you away from the habit/routine of smoking.

best thing you can do, is DON'T BUY A PACK OF SMOKES. you're almost in the home stretch...stick with it.

Alright, I know this is almost off topic, but oh well. It seems like with how many people die from smoking that congress or somebody would make a law wheening nicotine out of tobaco products. I know it seems crazy but with all the other stupid laws i'm just suprised it hasn't been brought up yet.

Edit: unless it has, because I don't really follow the laws too much

You cant really take the nicotine out of tobacco products... it is produced by the plant.

The first two weeks are by far the hardest part. After that it gets easier. If you really want to stop and can tell yourself that you'll never ever smoke a cigarette again then you'll be successful.
