The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    4/18/11

    Bench
    bar x 20
    95 x 5
    135 x 2
    157.5 x 2 sets of 5, 157.5 x 11 (failed on 12th rep)

I pushed it more this time. Got 2.5 more lbs and 1 more rep. Progress.

    Squat
    bar x 10
    135 x 3
    185 x 2
    225 x 2
    245 x 2 sets of 5, 245x12

    12th rep was a grinder.

    Curls - 60 x 16, 60 x 12
    Neck Harness - 25lbs 4x40

Supersetted the curls with the first two sets of neck harness.

Thanks fellas. Not sure how DL will go tonight, I slept badly because of storms but I ate like a boss so it should be interesting.

    4/20/11

    OH Press
    bar x 10
    75 x 3
    102.5x2x5, 102.5x11

+2.5 lbs and +1 rep. Progress. The last set felt really light until the last couple of reps.

    DL
    135 x 5
    185 x 2
    240 x 12+1 (7 second pause between reps 12 and 13)

It's good to be back to mixed grip, felt very confident on each rep. I just ran out of gas. NEED TO CONDITION.

Pull-up negative ladders - blah blah blah
Neck harness - 25 lbs 4x42 - Once I hit 4 sets of 50 reps I will bump the weight to 30 lbs and drop back down to 4x25 and begin creeping up again.

Lying leg raises - 10 reps. Just did these on a whim. I think I will start doing sets of these between neck harness sets.

excellent progress on the press, the conditioning will come. You won't be doing 13 rep deadlifts for too long

13 reps was the magic number that I fucked my back up on...just sayin....

On a more positive note- awesome job on the Pullups!! 3 blahs is pretty Spiffy..jk. the negatives really do help a lot, and actually I've been using reverse bands after my normal few sets of pull ups just to get a little more volume in on the pullups. Nice to see your bench on the move too and squats look good but then again you've always had a strong squat.

Thanks. I think the negatives will help, I just need to be more consistent with them. But I hate them so I use any excuse to not do them. I especially appreciate the comment about my squatting, thanks John. The best part is I've had zero IT band pain for months. I used to have issues with that.

We'll see about that! You are probably right though.

I think I've figured out that doing my pressing movements first means I need to take more time to warm up. That has helped on bench and overhead both.

    4/22/2011

    Bench
    barx10
    95 x 5
    135x2
    160x2x5, 160x11

Pushed hard for these, felt good.

    Squat
    bar x 10
    135 x 5
    185 x 2
    225 x 1
    250x2x5, 250x11

Maybe could've gotten 12, not sure. The line between one more rep and not standing back up was getting blurry.

    EZ bar curls
    65 x 15, 65x10

Neck harness (with leg raises 3x7 supersetted between)
    25 lbs 3x44, 25lbs x 38 (what the hell?)

The 3rd set of neck raises was way too hard, and I just couldn't get past 38 on the 4th set. Not sure what happened here, maybe the leg raises between sets messed me up. If it happens again I will bump up to 30 lbs and down to 25 reps.

    Overall a solid session.

    5/4/11

    Bench

    bar x ?
    95 x 10
    115 x 3
    135 x 2
    160x2x5, 160x10

Wasn't sure how this would go after a week and a half off but it felt good. 10th was a grind.

    Deadlift

    135 x 5
    225 x 2
    250 x 15

Just gassed at the end, I had more reps. My back feels really good too. I didn't have any injuries but a bit of time off seems to have made things in my lower back even better than before.

Nothing else tonight, short on time.

Sounds like you're being a little hard on yourself, every session has looked solid.

I am just annoyed with my attitude towards squats, I am letting the weight intimidate me a little.

Hey kill nice session. I don't see anything to be pissed about. Looks like bench went really well and I'd be happy as hell with those squats. 255x10 is nothing to sneeze at. Nice work!
