The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Chub - yeah it sucks. I try to get on the ab wheel now and then but it is easy to talk myself out of it.

Pat - My jerk was surprisingly solid. I can't snatch for crap but my split jerk was good enough the owner/coach had me do a few demo reps for everyone to point out how to do them right. It was a nice ego boost and very unexpected. Glad you understood what I meant about it hurting to be still. Weird feeling that I wasn't sure was normal.

I'm down to 213 this morning, which is cool because I was 216.5 before bed. Eating most of my calories early and not eating at night makes such a huge difference.

    500m row, then

    “Daniel”
    For time:
    50 pull-ups
    400-meter run
    95-lb. thruster, 21 reps
    800-meter run
    95-lb. thruster, 21 reps
    400-meter run
    50 pull-ups

Used medium band for first 50, heavy band for 2nd 50. 31:01. The pull-ups sucked the most. I thought I'd do better. I actually found the thrusters pretty manageable compared to the pull-ups.

On the bright side I am down to 211.6. Weight is coming off nicely.

Crap man it's Monday and it is still a struggle to lift my arms above my head. I apparently suck at pull-ups and need to put in some time on them.

Today was the first day I could finally raise my arms up all the way.

DL - Worked up to a few triples @325 lbs. Was going for 80% which would've been 340 but 325 felt heavy enough.

Full Clean - worked up to a 185 lb. double. Failed early on the first rep of 195. I wasn't being explosive so I just left it at 185.

WOD - 2 minute AMRAP of full cleans. Got 14 @135 lbs.

I got to the gym late and felt rushed the whole time which I hate. But still got some ok lifting in. I'm just glad my arms and lats don't hurt as much today.

Yeah 2 minute WODs are my favorite.

    Today:
    750m row
    mobility stuff

Snatch Balance triples - worked up to either 115 or 125, can't remember which.

WOD - Nancy - 5 rounds for time
    400m run
    15 overhead squats @95 lbs.

Completed in 19:55. My 400m runs got sloooow. And arm/shoulder stability on the later OH squats became an issue. Unbroken the first set, then 12+3, then 6+9 (???), then 5+5+5 for the last two rounds. Nancy's a B.

Nancy is the worst because if you have mobility issues you either get to a) run in oly shoes or b) ohs in running shoes.

I don't have oly shoes anyway so that wasn't an issue for me. I really should get some.

    Today:

    Chipper

90 Double Unders or 200 singles
    75 Cal Row
    60 Russian KB Swings (2pd/1.5)
45 Box Jumps (24/20) (jump ups are encouraged, but step downs are great!)
    30 Back Squat (135/95)
    15 Push press/jerk (135/95)
    800m run

Not good. Some external factors but I also just don't have enough energy ever.

edit: forgot to actually put my time: 29:16.

Worked on some split jerk technique. I've been pushing my back foot too far back.

    WOD:

    200m run
    40 wall balls
    40 Burpees
    200m run
    30 wall balls
    30 Burpees
    200m run
    20 wall balls
    20 burpees

Completed in 19:02. Better than Friday.

I feel sick just reading that! Great effort!

On the Oly shoes, I bought some Do-wins... can't fault them.
Age: 41 - Height: 5'10" - Weight: 195lb (NOT LEAN! (but maybe finally getting a little bit leaner?))

    Zercher Squat: 140kg (308lbs) x 1

As much as I dislike wall ball, this WOD would have been right up my alley. Nice time.

I've actually done WODS with and without shoes..lol. I remember one of them I did my runs in Nike Free's and slipped them off for double unders or for OLY lifting. They're really easy to get on and off if you don't tie them too tight.

Thanks for stopping by mac. I've heard good things about the Do-wins, just have to convince myself that the expense is worth it.

Thanks Chub. Not where I need to be yet but it was an improvement for sure.

I go back and forth on wall balls. They used to bother my hamstring but haven't for a while. I can't imagine doing double unders without shoes, I need the cushioning.

    4/23

    WOD
    1 mile run
    2000m row
    1 mile run

Completed in 26:06. Not bad. I am learning better how to control my breathing while I run. Also honed my technique some on the row and figured out how to be a bit more efficient per stroke. Really enjoy rowing, I wish I could have a C2 at my house. But I don't have $800+ just sitting around.

    Bench:

    135x5
    155x3
    165x3
    175x3 x2
    185x3

I get the impression that programming bench press at a CF gym is uncommon. Just another reason why I like this place so much. They actually care about strength training. Though I do think I could stand to focus a little more on it.

    Overhead squat

    95 x 3
    115 x 3
    125 x 3 x 3

Not my favorite movement but whatever.

    WOD:

    Double Chipper
    4min AMRAP
    5 wall climbers
10 chest to bar pull ups
    15 Hand Stand Push Ups
    20 box Jumps (24/20)
    25 jumping lunges
    30 HR Push Ups
    35 slam balls (50/30)

    2 min Rest
    8min AMRAP
    of the same thing

Got through 39 reps the first 4 minutes, then 82 reps the last 8 minutes. Shoulders got pretty toasted after overhead squats, wall climbers, and HSPU. Never did make it to the slam balls.

Only ever tried OH squatting with really light weight but found it HARD going so great effort with those! Some of those WODs would kill me... don't think I could do a single hand stand press up!

The Do-wins were significantly cheaper than the Adidas and Reebok equivalents (on UK websites at least).

nice lookin wods in here lately. your times are good as well.

the trick to DU's without shoes is....

There is no trick. Don't miss.LOL

If you look at the last page in Jed's journal there's a pic of my face after doing backwards double unders and missing. I've got a red welp across my face and my lips are all swollen up. Hitting myself, even with a wire rope, never really bothered it. It HURT, but just wasn't something I thought about much.

Here in the US Do-Wins are about the same as most other companies it seems. I have to scale the handstand stuff, I could do maybe one full push-up on the wall, if I had perfect form.

Yeah they feel weird. If I can get in a good groove it's a lot easier. Having to reset with the bar overhead sucks.

Haha, not really. But that's because my diet has been horrible. I've been making bad decisions about things like donuts and Reese's Easter Eggs.

Ugh, that was so close to your eyes. I can't do front DUs so I don't foresee ever attempting them backwards.

    4/28/2014

    Push Press
    95 x 5
    115 x 4
    135 x 2
    155 x 2
    175 x 2
    185 x 1, failed 2nd rep

I had the strength for it, I started the rep poorly and couldn't muscle through it. Irritating.

    WOD:

8 tabata rounds for each movement (20 seconds work 10 seconds rest):

50 lb. slam ball shoulder throws (lowest score was 8)

Slam ball squats (lowest score 7)

Standard overhead slam balls (lowest score 5)

Finished with an 800m row in 3:25. Legs are like jelly right now.

nice push press. I really miss doing it, probably just because I was pretty good at it..lol. 185 is great though. im sure you know, a lot of success comes from just trying to be as efficient with the movement as possible.
