    Okay guys and gurls, I've noticed that many of you regulary drink upto 8-10 litres of water EACH day. My question is this: is this really necessary and why?

    I understand that consuming water on a regular basis is required for hydration purposes, while the old H20 cleanses your body of toxins, etc but why so much. 2-4 litres a day I can understand (but still I need to go to the toilet every 15-20 minutes-christ!) So how do you water melons justify so much of this liquid?

    Screw all that. The reason that bodybuilders need so much water is that they NEED IT. We breathe harder, work harder, sweat more, and push our metabolisms (and every other part of our body for that matter) to the maximum of our physical abilities. We demand more from our bodies, and because of that, our bodies demand more nutrients, more rest, and most importantly, more water.
    Everything that a normal person needs we need more of and more oft. We eat seven times a day. We take cans of tuna to work to eat in the break room.
    It all ocmes down to my last point...no, not the tuna, but the fact that what we do to our bodies requires more, much more than the average person.

    It keeps the body in a hydrated state ..... de-hydration casues muscle break down.
    It also helps to flush out keytones and urea (by products).

    As the body is 70%+ water ... it is essential for the body to function.

    Hmm, I understand ElaboriteBurn's curiosity.

    Not that I doubt that water is necessary, but how do you determine the amount? Or do you just overcompensate to be sure?

    Is thirst not a good enough proxy for increased water requirements?

    Drink till your urine is clear white?

    When is enough enough, why not 30 litres?

    Does milk count? Juice?

    Also just curious.

    I drink enough water so that I don't **** neon. Believe me, that is a task within itself.

    By the time you feel thirsty, your body has already been dehydrated for 30-60 minutes. Drink until you pee clear all the time - that's when you know you are getting enough.

    Doesn't drinking water help you burn more calories.....because your body has to constently raise the temperature of the water you just drank to 98.6 degrees ????

    the neon is from the riboflavin in youy vitamin. Trying to drink enough to **** clear would be futile as many of the good vits are a more time release form. Just drink regularly all day all the time. Your body gets used to it.

    also, the kidneys have to work harder to remove wastes when your dehydrated. And with all the protein we eat theres a lot of urea that needs removed!

    Right, thanks for your replies fellow BB's. A few new insights have been ascertained into this area but I am still curious about quantities.

    The point Anthony made about drinking enough so that your urine is clear all day long is good one and one that I've heard before, but is this really possible to achieve?
    Realistically speaking most of us have jobs and at present consuming 4 litres a day means taking a leak every 15 minutes or so.
    To double this intake must tax your system unnaturally hard (urine tracks, bladder etc) but then again BB is unnatural when you think about it. Putting stress and strain constantly on your body to increase the size and density of your muscles was not intended by mothernature.

    Someone mentioned that as soon as your body becomes dehydrated muscles start to deteriate, is this true? and if so how does one determine when the body becomes into a state of dehydration? (apart from feeling thirsty)

    Okay, I'm not flaming anyone or anyone's actions while drinking 10 litres of water per day but just wonder how people cope with such monotonous 'rituals' as constant urination and consumption.

    One final word, I really admire all of you who actually do this, it shows dedication and commitment beyond the grasp of others- you must have a real thirst for the game so to speak. Good luck to all of ya.

    I have just started to ensure I drink more water in my diet..

    Yesterday was 2 and a hlaf litres and I wentot the bathroom a few more tmies than usual..

    Shooting for 3 - 3 and a half today..

    I usually try and shoot for at least 6L + a day, and on sundays I can consume extra usually anything between 12 to 16 litres, me old pal Cack told me a while back his personal best is 28 litres in one day

    Right now I'm at around 8 liters a day. I hit the bathroom maybe once every hour or so. Believe it or not, there are still times when I get thirsty, and I'm not a big guy either. I guess your body just gets used to the amount.

    I'm looking at a 4 liter graduated cylinder right now, and thinking..... how does anyone drink 28 liters????

    28 litres??????


    I drink 10 litres a day of pure water and that goes up to 17-18litres a day for 3 days in the last week of contest prep then I reduce it way down for the last 3 days

    only clear water should count in your total intake as other liquids like milk and juice require breaking down inside your body

    Having clear urine is not difficult at all. When I take a multivitamin (which is rare, but I try), only once is my pee not clear and that's the first pee after I take the vitamin.

    i've drank like 8 gallons one day...

    i never drank more than 10 liters consistently.

    currently only 4-6 liters.

    I have no guage of how much water i drink per day.

    I just try to drink about a pint of water with every meal. And loads before, during and after trainning.

    Hehhe...the word "pee" is funny...


    I try fill my 1liter Aquafina bottle four times a day. I'm cutting now so I'll shoot for six.
