i'm thinking about ditching my YMCA gym membership, and just putting the money towards a... BOW FLEX!!! just kiddin. i want to put the money towards a power rack, barbell, and plates. any brands/makes/models i should steer clear of? and who are the best companies, my budget is relatively cheap, so it doesnt have to be amazing, my lifts are relatively light (at the moment), so it doesnt have to be an out standing rack.
all advice is appreciated.

I picked up this one http://www.bodysolid.com/Item.aspx?I...Pro+Power+Rack used for $300 with an OLY bar + v-bar handle from a guy who needed the space for his child. I love it. It's really sturdy.
www.newyorkbarbells.com sells a good rack, so does www.elitefts.com if money isn't an issue. Check www.craigslist.com every day and hopefully you'll find something.
I love the guy on the front page of your link hoot. Loaded up for squats with a pad, gloves and sweatbands. Stylin'
"Fine, if I'm not allowed to light it on fire, can my imaginary friend?"
Check Craigslist before you buy anything. You can usually find something for cheap (and sometimes free).
I bought my rack from newyorkbarbells.com and plates I just buy wherever I can find them cheap.

Yeah check craigslist. There was a guy in my area selling a huge rack, 400+ lbs of weights and two oly bars for about $500. If I'd had room for it I would've bought it myself, someone got a good deal.
In response to the OP, the best deals are usually used if your lucky enough to come across them. I got a decent rack from newyorkbarbells for an excellent price so I can recommend them as well. At the time that I was shopping I remember looking at the Yukon and Body Solid models along with Powertec's as all high on my list. Ultimately, it came down to the best bang for the buck. Look for a model that you can add features to later if you can't afford the space or dough for "the dream set-up" at this time. You will be glad you did.
It is currently a fad, at this writing, for boys to think they need a "six pack", although most of them don't have an ice chest to put it in.
